No famous orator, he was active enough in pre-Revolutionary politics to be elected to the First Continental Congress. He attended the Second Continental Congress in his old uniform & was put in command of the new army. (Partly because he looked the part. But he was far from an empty suit.) ---

Being a general isn’t entry level. Especially for an alliance commander like Ike or Wes Clark. That’s serious foreign policy and commander-in-chief type experience. Not to mention it is government work, at least as significant in terms of skill set as a Cabinet official. ---
