I just saw this thread. I am very sorry to hear this. From his posts here, I never would have expected something like this to happen. At least you probably made his final years happier than they otherwise would have been. I think everyone has “what ifs” and regrets after someone dies, but I do truly think that you should not blame yourself. I am a physician who has worked in psychiatric hospitals. I know a psychiatrist who says to their patients, “If you really want to kill yourself, I can’t stop you.” Even if someone winds up in a locked psychiatric hospital, the day comes when the person is sent home and it is up to that person to make the choice to continue treatment. If even a professional trained in mental illness can’t force someone to get better, well, a loved one with no training in mental illness certainly can’t fix everything either. You did the best that you could do just by loving him and trying to get him to consider getting help. I hope that if anyone knows how to get in touch with his daughter they will save these photos and some of the memories about him for her sake in case she would like to have them someday. ---

I met Paul at the first Gettysdope. I was very surprised to learn that there was another doper who not only lived in our small area, but was actually just across town from me. He always let me use his grill for Gettysdope, and he was quick to lend a hand if you needed it. I remember having a problem with my truck a couple of years ago. I posted some questions about it in GQ, and Paul immediately offered to help me fix it that weekend (we fixed it that Saturday at his house). Unfortunately, even though he was only right across town from me, I didn’t see him much outside of Gettysdopes. He was a good friend. I’m going to miss him. Here are pics from last year’s Gettysdope.
