The Pentagon is tracking a Chinese spy balloon

Props to the writers there to avoid all the balloon puns they could have used.

While I doubt this particular incident escalates into anything I did read some commentary with what I thought was a good point. The current political climate in the US is such that everyone was screaming that you’re a pussy if you don’t shoot it down immediately. If the president is swayed by politics then that doesn’t bode well for deescalation in a more critical situation. Now, I don’t think Biden is a slave to political rhetoric (see Afghanistan withdrawal), but I still think there’s some influence.

But the right was never going to give praise no matter what.

Hmm? Yeah, that’s the point, that the current political climate isn’t geared to dealing with any actual crisis.

I was talking about the dangers of inflation months before the papers.

Gasbag.

Ballbuster.

Only 327 more kills before the F-22 equals the Sopwith Camel.*

*Number pulled out of my butt. I can’t find any lists of observation balloon kills by aircraft type from WWI.

Popper.

“Buster” sounds kinda sorta toughguy.
“Frank1” and “Frank2” are better.

Toting up the kills in this article in Wiki I come up with 223.

However there are an unknown number of pilots with one kill each and the table itself says the list is incomplete

Die Fledermaus?

Do you speak of bats or the opera?

Someone above mentioned that the call signs refer to Frank Luke who shot down many balloons in WWI.

I just figured it’d mean you’re a natural at flying around, and that it sounds kind of like “deflater mouse.”

Oh, I see.
Who makes up call names?

Have they collected the balloon out of the ocean yet?

I, citizen, haven’t heard anything. I also don’t think I will. But I’d be surprised if they didn’t take care of that first thing.

Yeah, but that list is by pilot, not plane. Though we can infer from your relatively low total that any specific model of plane probably only had dozens of balloon kills rather than hundreds.

So it turns out there were Chinese balloon incursions during the former guy’s term. Of course that does nothing to stem the self-righteous outrage from pinheads like Little Marco. I’d like to see the documents on previous incursions to be declassified and publicized.

As I understand it the current line from the Chinese government is that it was a commercially owned weather balloon. I haven’t seen them name the owner, however. And I haven’t heard that the supposed company told anyone their valuable balloon strayed off course.
