Okay, I’ve been waiting for someone to zombify the Alternate-Ending-to-Big thread so I could bring this up, but this thread will do nicely. A while back in the AEtB thread, someone kept pounding away at the Newlywed Game “Dat be the butt, Bob” as proof that Big really had an alternate ending, because the NG anecdote was supposedly proven. Except it wasn’t. Sometime in the 2000s, someone dug up a clip from the NG where the question was “Where was the weirdest place your wife had the urge to make whoopee?” (ugh) and the husband said “We were driving on the highway and she wanted to pull over and get busy at a rest stop.” When the wife was asked the same question, she looked adorably confused and said, “I dunno…was it in the ass?” Everyone roared with laughter, including her. But that does not match the anecdote. The couple in the clip were Latino, not black. The wife was not a sassy black woman who answered immediately and with great confidence, as in the UL, which is really why that UL was so widespread. It was not a matter of “OMG, someone made a reference to anal sex on a show that was designed to elicit suggestive comments!” The real point of the UL was to “prove” that if you take Those People out of the ghetto, they will continue to act “ghetto”, and not even know they’re being inappropriate. It was about (what was not yet called) Ebonics, not about a risqué comment. **So it didn’t happen,** not the way the UL presented it. * * * And I’m sure about Spaghetti-Os being Franco-American. When I was in elementary school and a certain commercial was on a lot, if someone in my class goofed up, they would say 🎶 “Uh-oh, Spaghetti-O!” and someone within earshot would respond 🎶 “Franco-American!” ---

The maps they remember from childhood may well have been Mercator and/or similar projections, which do in fact distort the “size, shape, and location of countries and continents…” If they’re only now learning that Greenland is actually only a small fraction of the size of Africa, it may well feel like the ground is literally shifting beneath their feet. That clip really does a good job of showing just how much of what a lot of people think they know about geography is due to distorted map projections, and how disorienting it is to realize just how distorted their perceptions really are. ---
