You knew this was coming, right? Trump speaking in Iowa on October 16, 2023. He was distracted by some flies, which prompted this digression: _I didn’t know you had flies here in Iowa_ _I hate flies_ _Now I’ll get in trouble_ _For saying that._ _Cruelty to Animals_ _No,_ _It’s true._ _You know,_ _I said the other day_ _I was at a place_ _And there’s a beautiful place_ _But_ _They had too many flies_ _And I said_ _“Get fly paper!”_ _They said_ _"Sir,_ _They’re not allowed to sell it anymore_ _Because of Cruelty to Animals."_ _They actually said that._ _I don’t know_ _Can you get fly paper?_ _Used to be Great,_ _Right?_ _But_ _They say_ _"You can’t do that anymore,_ _Sir,_ _It’s Cruelty."_ _What the hell_ _Is going on_ _With this country?_ What the hell, indeed. You don’t see fly paper anymore because we have bug zappers. The stickiness of flay paper is a pain to deal with and having huge streamers of slowly dying flies is so gross that its presence is used in movies as a way to show that an establishment is seedy and unclean. Bug zappers on the other hand are relatively clean, efficient and also provide an unending supply of cheap entertainment. ---

Fly paper as mentioned above is still sold. It produces less of a fire hazard than a burning fly falling onto the carpet. ---

At one point I was a contractor at a very modern R&D lab. But the ventilation system had become infested with tiny, gnat-like flies. While we waited for the physical plant guys to get rid of the flie, we went to the local hardware store and hung up pieces of sticky fly-paper that unrolled from a cylinder. Crude and low-tech, but it worked. Back in the 1960s Shell sold the No-Fly Strip, a yellow piece of something or other permeated with fly-killing chemicals that slowly oozed out into the air. They had one hung up in the food prep area at my boy scout camp, which probably violated some ordnance. Cruelty to Boy Scouts. Anyway, recollection of that inspired one of my early sig lines: “Are you bothered by pesky Killer Cyborgs from the Future? Get the Shell Terminator Strip!” ---

Sure its still sold, but Trump is correct that it is probably seen around less than it used to be, but the reasons have nothing to do with cruelty to animals. In particular the sort of swanky places that Trump frequents are no going to want long sticky strands of dead/dying flies hanging as part of their decor. ---
