Side note: I don’t think I ever noticed that Howard from The Newhart Show was the same actor that played Roger from I Dream Of Jeannie.

I’ve said a few times that I don’t much care about the actors, only the characters.

This was a rare exception for me. As a kid I really enjoyed I Dream of Jeannie. As a tween/teen I wasn’t much interested in the Bob Newhart Show, but saw at least parts of a few episodes.

Every time “Major Healey” came into Newhart’s living room it just destroyed my engagement. The fact Roger was a US Army pilot / astronaut & Howard was an airline pilot didn’t help. Sorta made an uncanny valley.

I’m also thinking that in a way, many of these Poochie endings are examples of this other phenomenon:

What takes you out of a TV show or movie that’s actually trivial?

When a character smokes but it’s obvious that the actor doesn’t. As a former smoker, the difference between a smoker and a non-smoker is easy to tell and I immediately think, “They do/don’t smoke.”

I know this post is one such. How trivial a slap-dash ending seems to any viewer depends a lot on how invested they are in the show and especially in the story arc, such as it is.
