[If LOTR Was Written by Somebody Else](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=138905&highlight=written) has the sort of obsessive nerd humor that epitomizes a lot of this place. Lots of creativity, but it’s nerd creativity.

This thread is what brought me to the SDMB in the first place. Someone sent me a link to it sometime towards the end of 2003. I lurked a while before joining.

There’s two. Either the “I stuck my wedding ring up my nose”, which cued dozens of Dopers to try. In fact, when I got married this year, I tried. :o

I think the quintessential SDMB thread has to be one that fights ignorance and actually solves a mystery.
Two of my favorites:
The epic [Challenge! Who is the man sitting with all the stars on Johnny Carson?](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=722215)
and the neverending [Anyone else remember the alternate ending to “Big”?](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=109762)
I love them because they not only tell a great story, they also find an answer (even though in the case of the second thread, not everyone can accept it).
