Well, I love root beer, but the rest leaves me cold.

Actually, I could not answer any one of the OP’s questions. Well, I knew about Capt Kirk and Capt Picard, but could not discuss who is more important. And, oddly enough, although I know who the 22nd and the 24th president is, I cannot come up with the name of the 23rd. Damn, I used to be able to name the presidents in order (except was it, “We Polked you in '48 and we will Pierce you in '52” or the reverse).

Here is a question: What unusual thing happened in the first game of the doubleheader at Shea Stadium on June 21, 1964? (I was there.)

Jim Bunning pitched a perfect game for the Phillies against the Mets

I would think that people should know the fundamentals of baseball and football.

> I have to disagree that questions about Batman or Superman are ‘geeky’. Batman and Superman are American myths. It is not like quoting a short lived tv series “Serenity Now!”. They have been around for 80 years and are more popular than ever. To me it would be the equivalent of being Greek and not knowing who Zeus or Hercules is.

I doubt very many people pray to Batman.

Now that, my friend, is a good quiz!

I agree that “the fundamentals of football and baseball” is a pretty good subject. Even those people who don’t follow sports at all know the following stuff:
–3 outs to an inning
–9 innings in a game
–The bases are first, second, third, and home
–The infield fly rule (just kidding)
–A football field is 100 yards
–The quarterback is the guy who “assumes the position”
–You get the ball into the end zone to get a touchdown

Most foreigners are completely clueless about this stuff.

In my 7th grade class they made us pass the test. It wasn’t all that hard, but we did study for it.

I had an Argentinian roommate who got frustrated at the American sports analogies when he was just trying to read a famous pastor’s book. He seemed to be of the attitude that he’d stumbled into this backwater that had all its own inbred customs that no one in the real world cared about. He couldn’t get any Spanish stations on DirecTv at the time, and these people _don’t even watch futbol_.

More questions for the test:

Explain these sports analogies:

1. He’s really swinging for the fences.

2. No one bats a thousand.

3. He put it out of the ballpark.

4. That’s bush league.

5. She’s their cleanup hitter.

6. That question was a real curveball.

7. They used to hit home runs, but not any more.

8. That was out of left field.

9. She’s the on-deck sales rep.

10. With so many people sick, she had to pinch-hit.

11. He’s had to step up to the plate since Roger retired.

12. They did an end run around the court ruling.

13. Faced with the question, the president punted.

14. He’s a real Monday morning quarterback type of boss.
