Have I ever told y’all the story of how my high school’s JCL (Junior Classical League) club made the state convention change the catapult competition rules? It was back in nineteen hundred and ninety-seven and we all decided to enter the catapult competition. The rules said that we had to propel a potato a certain number of feet. So we built a potato cannon. Hey, if the Romans had the technology they would have done it, right? We stalwart few brought the potato cannon to UNC Chapel Hill (_ptui_) and lugged it to the catapult field. And, lo, we did win the competition hands down. But a dark shadow did fall across our victory in the form of The Judges. And the judges did look down upon the potato cannon as it was not historically accurate. And the rules were consulted, but the specifications of the propelling action were unclear. And it was that the next year the rules were rewritten to specify that the propelling action had to take place in historically-accurate catapult form. This is part of the reason why I can’t stand UNC Chapel Hill (_ptui_). Rules lawyers, all of 'em. ---
