The 'Recommend me an album by this artist' Thread

Brilliant Corners is usually ranked among his best stuff.

So how about Django Reinhardt?

I can’t quite understand either of those suggestions - jazz doesn’t work in compilations because albums are often recorded with a specific “idea” or central theme. It’s not that there aren’t jazz tunes that work just as well on their own, it’s just that the “concept album” (if you will permit me to borrow from rock idiom) is a lot more common in jazz.

I actually don’t own any of his albums, but from what I hear, his albums with The Stooges were the best. Either Fun House or Raw Power.

How about New Order? I have Substance, The Best of, and Get Ready. Should I get any albums?

Are any Billy Bragg albums worth getting if I already have Must I Paint You a Picture?

Oh yeah, how about Lou Reed?
I have all the VU albums, Transformer, The Blue Mask, New York, and Magic and Loss.

Yes. Get Technique.

Okay, guys, what about Jonathan Richman? Should I just get the best-of or is there a good specific album?

Fevers and Mirrors.

I’m going to second this.

His first release, just called The Modern Lovers, is one of the best albums you will ever hear. That said, it is not entirely representative of what he would sound like for the rest of his career. There is a great compilation called The Berserkley Years that contains tracks from The Modern Lovers’ album, as well as a good cross section of his later stuff (into the 80’s, anyway).

Damn, I wish I knew anything about any of the artists in this thread so I could help out! Be that as it may, we’ve still got a few Dopers needing recs. Help?

Recommend Hunter Hawk a Bill Laswell album.

Recommend continuity eror a Jonathan Richman album.

Recommend Talon Karrde a Lou Reed album.

Recommend Excalibre a Django Reinhardt album.

Discovered a new artist (well, new to me) that I really need a rec for. I’ve heard a couple songs, and I love his sound. I’ve heard his solo stuff, btw, I know he’s played with bands before.

Recommend me a Glenn Danzig album.

There’s a lot of compilations out there, all of them overlapping to one degree or another. The key, I think, is to find one that covers Django and his collaborations with Stephane Grappelli in the Quintette du Hot Club de France. Those are the classic recordings from the 1930’s when Django made his mark.

An example is the disc ‘Quintette du Hot Club de France: 25 Classics 1934-1940’. It covers that time period and includes Django staples like ‘Minor Swing’ , ‘Djangology’, and ‘Nuages’.

Otherwise I think you’d be fine with any compilation that looks to come from a reputable company (Blue Note, Verve).

AMG picks Danzig II, IIRC, but also gives a very high rating to Danzig I.

Danzig II, “Lucifuge,” is the best by far. “I” is worth owning, but “II” is incredible.

I knew I was forgetting someone! – check out Tricky. He does trip-hop, and even though I’m not a trip-hop fan, I really dig his stuff. There’s a compilation album, A Ruff Guide, that’ll give you a good sampling of his work.

Btw, ultrafilter, I got Sehnsucht and I love it! “Spiel Mit Mier” is my favorite song.

It is a good song. I’m told that it’s about a man convincing his brother to masturbate him.
