There might be more, since men suffer from this “patriarchy” thing as well.
However, if they speak up about it, they risk being associated with these “Red Pill” people, called “whiny,” told to “take it like a man,” and such. Mostly by people (even many who call themselves “feminists”) who benefit from keeping men exactly where they are. But also by people who just don’t understand how the sex with so much more power (ostensibly) could possibly have any problems.
So there’s not much benefit to talking about it. I believe that sincere, thoughtful feminists understand this phenomenon. But most humans are not sincere, thoughtful feminists.
Okay, I watched the trailer and extended trailer. It is laughable all around. There aren’t enough roll-eyes emoticons.
First, we have Cassie, who really is more of a tooth-whitening strip spokesperson. Cute and hot and rich. So who else would sell this to other men? She’s cuddled on a couch for many of her interviews, some with rich guys in their homes tearing up over it.
It’s in Canada. OH, CANADA! The men’s rights are awful! There’s people telling stories that seem totally made up. One, a 35-year-old woman who was raped by a 15-year-old boy. And she managed to sue him for child support. (OH, MY!!) Seriously? It’s told by an older woman, without much story background, who thinks it’s excessive, trying to prove that Oh My! Even women are outraged, gentlemen!
They never show her going to homeless shelters, in streets, heck, it’s Toronto. But always in gorgeous neighborhoods and at rallies with way less than a hundred people combined. Doesn’t seem like an issue (if it is an issue) of any importance.
Here in the US, I believe it was a year or two ago when the word “vagina” could not be spoken in hearings concerning rape/abortion/etc. Powerful people like Santorum wanting to end abortion on rapes, because it’s really a blessing from god. NONE of that seems to be mentioned in this pseudo-doc.
Maybe our OP could shed some light on how much of this drivel focused on recent laws passed that directly effect women on a healthcare level. Or judges in Utah & California who favor bishops and rich white Mormon kids after they’ve raped and cry when sentencing them?
I haven’t seen the documentary, but – having flabbergastedly browsed the relevant subreddits on a few occasions – I can agree that The Red Pill isn’t even about men’s rights, anyway. It’s all about viewing women as hypergamous, immature, borderline-intellectual-functioning sluts whose flourishing requires the stern guidance of a strong man with high sexual market value. It’s bafflingly awful.
If someone wants to make men’s rights more respectable, then don’t hitch your wagon to The Red Pill, you moron.
Sure, but those problems are themselves the consequences of patriarchy and toxic masculinity, so if they seriously care about them then by positioning themselves as anti-feminism they’re just shooting themselves in the foot, since those are exactly the sorts of problems feminism is working to make progress on.
You know when guys get fucked over royal style? It’s when they’re white guys in the U.S. of A. That’s when they get fucked left and right and up and down. It’s a fuckin travesty. About time the smartest of them banded together for action! Action, I say!
Funny someone mentioned that 4 of 5 suicides are men in the trailer. This was the first laughable point. The way it’s worded is feminists make men commit suicide. I doubt this very much. The child support payments to three women, however, plus the failed bets on the Raptors might really be the cause.
Women make more suicide attempts, but men are more successful due to their method. Men tend to use guns while women tend to overdose on pills (Barlow & Durand, 2015).
It’s a reference to the movie “The Matrix”, where the hero takes a red pill to see through the illusion of the fake world he lives in. While a nifty gimmick in the movie it has been adapted by conspiracy theorists and Suburban extremists of various types to say how cool they are because they ‘see’ through the illusion of our society, etc.
They often talk about Red Pills while wearing Guy Fawkes masks from “V”. Reality is a distant neighbor to these people.
My too subtle point was meant as a humorous observation that, like (Stalinist) Communists and Republicans, adherents to “Red Pill” thinking confuse selfish bullying with freedom and (despite the movie) have a deep aversion to reality as it is, strongly preferring their doctrinally correct Bizarro World instead.
Life on the Red Pill is more like life on drugs (“Reds” back in the day) than it is like reality. Despite their loud protestations to the exact opposite.
I haven’t seen the film but from what I’ve read, the name of it is an unfortunate coincidence that is confusing a lot of people.
There’s a forum or Reddit called TheRedPill that gives men sex and relationship advice based on evo-psych theories. It is not a men’s-rights forum although feminists often lump them together in order to associate MRAs with misogynistic stuff that gets posted there. The main men’s-rights forum on Reddit is simply called MensRights.
From what I read, this film project was started and named (based on the same Matrix “red pill” reference) before the “Red Pill” reddit forum existed. It has nothing to TheRedPill or the whole “pickup artist” thing.
Apparently the movie makes reference to the fact that shelters for domestic-violence victims routinely turn away battered men and accept only battered women. Regardless of where you stand on gender equality, I hope we can all agree that that is a problematic practice.
As someone who has worked with women’s shelters (in three countries) for the better part of a decade let me tell you this, women’s shelters are already tense and problematic enough without taking in “battered” men. I am pretty sure you would do less damage if you threw a live grenade in one.
And unlike what MRA’s might claim, most staff at a women’s shelter are qualified enough to know about vulnerable men and can guide them to places where they can get help, the trust I work with also runs a center for men, which is not too far away.
Finally, the biggest problem is teenage boys or abused teenage boys, no one really knows where to put them, too big and dangerous to put with children or even women, too vulnerable to put with men and need fairly specialised care to boot.
Geez, AK84, I had you pegged as an asshole then you go and post something compassionate like this. I hadn’t considered the problems with placing teenage boys so thank you for that enlightenment.
