In July of 1977 I was stationed at Ft. Lewis Washington and on July 2 there was a joint Canada Day/Independence Day celebration. The Canadian band wore those bearskin hats and the first thing they tried to do after marching off the field at the end was take them off. But everyone was rushing out to get pics so they sighed and put them back on. ---

The actual owners of the cattle are presumably the owners of Ballindalloch Castle, Mr. and Mrs. Guy McPherson Grant. Some credit must surely also go to the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society, of which Charles is a Patron. I hope the whole event went smoothly, that Charles did not step in a cow pie, and that the One Hundred and Fiftieth edition of the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society Herd Book is truly a splendid volume. ---

But all that visiting and inspecting involves making the kind of small talk to make people feel acknowledged and recognised, which is the effective part of the job. ---

The King paid _most_ of it, with the balance coming from the £302,000 compensation payment. One rather suspects that none of that money will have passed through Andrew’s hands. No point in the Crown Estates actually paying that money to him if he was due to pay the Crown Estates for the repairs. ---
