GOP, in the person of Texas Lt Governor, lies through it’s ass and blames Texas COVID surge on the blacks.

I know this has been reported elsewhere on the board, but I wasn’t sure where to post my request, so here it is. May we please heve a hearty “Fuck You” for Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis??
“A Florida judge has ruled that school districts in the state can require students to wear masks. At least 10 school districts — including some in many of the largest cities — had been defying state rules set by Gov. Ron DeSantis banning mask mandates.”

> **[Florida Judge Throws Out Gov. Ron DeSantis' Order Prohibiting School Mask...](https://www.npr.org/sections/back-to-school-live-updates/2021/08/27/1031714923/florida-judge-throws-out-governor-ron-desantis-order-prohibiting-masks-in-school)**
>
> The judge said DeSantis overstepped his authority when he ordered schools not to require masks for students. COVID-19, especially the delta variant, is spreading rapidly across the Florida.

Fuck You, DeSantis, you fucking piece of shit!

Utah:

> **[Could Texas abortion ban strategy be double-edged sword?](https://apnews.com/article/health-texas-lawsuits-environment-laws-8770f1944849585d87f0fd0d6a39e1e4)**
>
> The unusual legal strategy used to ban most abortions in Texas is already increasingly being employed in Republican-led states to target pornography, LGBT rights and other hot-button cultural issues.

> [@](#):
>
> In Utah, an anti-porn bill passed last year requiring sites to post a warning about dangers to minors. It [was called](https://apnews.com/article/lawsuits-laws-legislature-utah-pornography-554849bc4a3990802a9418659494d803) a free-speech violation by adult-entertainment sites, but the possible onslaught of lawsuits convinced major sites to comply before a single person sued.
>
> Republican Utah Rep. Brady Brammer said he modeled his bill on Proposition 65, which allows people who might have been exposed to potentially carcinogenic materials to sue and collect a kind of “bounty” if they win. Civil enforcement has long been a fixture of environmental law, with private attorneys acting as a kind of extension of stretched regulators. Court settlements with businesses often bring funding to green nonprofits.
>
> “Republicans are weaponizing the tool that Democrats thought they owned, which was civil enforcement,” Brammer said. “They’re following the tactics that Democrats have used for years, for decades, and they’re doing it for conservative causes.”

Lies.

The AP story does go on to explain, somewhat, but never explicitly says that what this jackass said was untrue; that’s a demerit to the AP IMO.

> The Texas abortion law, which lawmakers in several other states want to copy, has another unusual feature that vastly expanded the number of people who can sue. Unlike the vast majority of civil law, it doesn’t require people to show they’ve been directly affected.

So this Brammer guy is not just a jerk for what he’s trying to use the law to do, he’s a jerk for lying about how it’s being done.

He’s not lying about how it’s being used, he’s just extending the philosophy to grant standing for suits to anyone opposed to the “offending” action. It’s a huge leap in legal philosophy to consider this, but the model is supposed to operate on existing legal framework - if you assume standing can be extended this way.

We need anti-gun legislation written this way ASAP. Then the conservatives can be caught fighting hard for this type of legislation for abortions but fighting hard against this type of legislation for gun control. Nah, that won’t phase them. They’ll just argue gun rights are more sacred than women’s personal autonomy. That the life of zygote trumps the health of a woman.

> … the GOP governor held a press conference yesterday on vaccines. As The Tampa Bay Times [reported](https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-politics/2021/09/13/speakers-at-desantis-event-share-vaccine-misinformation/), it didn’t go well.
>
> > Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stood silently Monday as employees for the City of Gainesville repeated misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccines during a news conference set up by his office. “The vaccine changes your RNA,” said Darris Friend, who said he’s about a year and a half away from retirement after 22 years with the city. Another implied that the vaccine could kill her.
>
> Ideally, the governor, in a position of authority and ostensibly aware of reality, would’ve explained to the public that vaccines do not change people’s RNA and do not put anyone’s lives in danger.
>
> But as the Times’ [report](https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-politics/2021/09/13/speakers-at-desantis-event-share-vaccine-misinformation/) added, DeSantis “shifted his feet in apparent discomfort” but did not correct the obvious misinformation being peddled by confused people speaking alongside him.
>
> …
>
> …
>
> For much of the year, DeSantis has tried to thread a needle, telling the public that vaccines are good, while simultaneously insisting that they remain entirely voluntary. The former was intended to make the governor appear reasonable in the eyes of the reality-based community, while the latter would keep the ambitious politician popular with his party’s rabid base.
> For all intents and purposes, the strategy unraveled over the summer as Covid-19 cases, hospitalizations and fatalities spiked, and the governor struggled to justify his passivity in the face of an ongoing public health disaster.
>
> But yesterday, DeSantis started to lose the plot altogether. Instead of maintaining a vaccines-and-freedom-are-both-good posture, the Republican participated in a press conference in which the public was told bizarre nonsense about the one thing that can help end this nightmare.
>
> As Jon Chait [explained](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/09/desantis-and-the-agony-of-the-anti-anti-anti-vaxx-republican.html), DeSantis couldn’t step up, play the role of leader, and do the right thing because Republican politics has descended to a new level.
>
> “Once a political party’s percentage of kooks has risen above a certain threshold, it’s no longer practical to kick them out,” Chait [wrote](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/09/desantis-and-the-agony-of-the-anti-anti-anti-vaxx-republican.html). “They must instead be placated. It is a constant process of papering over distinctions to avoid an internal schism that would enrage the kooks. The Republican party didn’t set out to position itself with vaccine skeptics. But they have found themselves, once again, standing shoulder to shoulder with the absurd, looking down at their feet and pretending it isn’t happening.”

Well the mRNA vaccines do technically “change your RNA” in the same way that eating changes your blood sugar. Its just that unlike DNA, mRNA is a transitory aspect of our cellular biology and so isn’t permanently encoded in our cellular structure (other than indirectly promoting the creation of memory B-cells that are responsible for the vaccines immune effect.)

As I’ve said before, Republicans are quite capable of talking out of both sides of their ass at the same time. In April, 2010 the Arizona legislature passed the infamous [SB 1070](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona_SB_1070), at the time the toughest anti illegal-immigration measures around. It was signed four days later by Governor Brewer because, she said, the federal government was not doing its job protecting our (meaning Arizona’s) border with Mexico.

In November, 2010 [Proposition 203](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Arizona_Proposition_203) making medical marijuana legal (barely) passed by the voters, placed in the ballot after the Republican-dominated legislature refused to consider the question. The same Governor Brewer dragged her feet on setting up the necessary bureaucracy this time stating she was afraid of raising Federal ire by overstepping its regulations.

She and the state AG filed a federal lawsuit in May, 2011 “questioning some of the initiative’s provisions.[[18]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_in_Arizona#cite_note-18) The lawsuit sought a ruling on whether state employees involved in implementing certain provisions were subject to federal prosecution.[[19]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_in_Arizona#cite_note-19)[[20]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_in_Arizona#cite_note-20)” The lawsuit was dismissed in January, 2012, Brewer “immediately” began implementing the measure and the first dispensary opened December, 2012 – two years after the proposition passed.
