The people _who softened the ground for it_ did come wrapped in the flag and cross, conservative populists, but their problem was that just as long as you were there behind them to (cut taxes/repeal Roe) they chose to not notice your long knives. And I gotta say this, reminded by a today-on-history item last week: at the very least the OG Fascists called a meeting and kicked Benito’s ass to the curb when it became obvious he was badly losing them the war. Ours still feel they’re on the verge of winning bigly. ---
