Sources are reporting that the Jets have informed Aaron Rodgers that they plan to part ways with him. New Jets head coach Aaron Glenn was noncommittal about Rodgers’ future with the team in his introductory press conference two weeks ago; Glenn and Rodgers had a meeting last week, and reports are that, during that meeting, the quarterback was informed that they will not be bringing hm back. Rodgers’ contract will apparently leave the Jets with a large amount of dead money towards the cap, though depending on when they part company with him, they may be able to spread that over two years. Speaking as a Packer fan, who observed Rodgers’ career: he was an outstanding quarterback for many years, and was deserving of the accolades he received. He was/is undoubtedly one of the smartest people in football, but even during his prime, he clearly had what I’ve called, here on the board, a “prickly” personality, and increasingly demanded to have a large role in personnel decisions with his teams. If he’s cut before June 1, it’s Deshaun Watson type numbers ($49 million for next season). After June 1, it’s spread out to $14M for 2025 and $35M for 2026, which is still pretty big but more manageable, especially if the cap goes up. Aaron Glenn could be the greatest coach who has ever lived, but that would do no good if that comes with the type of front office or owner who would sign a deal like that for an aging QB. ---

You’re not going to catch me ever blowing smoke up either Rodgers or the Jets asses, but I don’t think this Rodgers contract is that huge of an indictment. He was one year off of an MVP season when they signed it, he’d not really shown major signs of any age-related regression. 2022 was definitely a down year for him, but not so bad that you’d think he was falling off a cliff. And it’s impossible to know how much of his current problems are related to the Achilles tear. Any QB at any age can tear an Achillies and it’s not commonly thought to be the type of injury that’s made dramatically more likely due to age. Pretty much all of Rodgers injuries to date had been due to hits, not non-contact soft tissue injuries, so there weren’t really any health red flags prior to the deal. I think the biggest failing of the Jets was probably painting themselves into a corner going into the negotiation such that they probably overpaid him a bit, but I don’t think it’s realistic to expect them to sign Rodgers at the time to a 1-2 year deal. The dude was getting paid one way or another. ---
