The Runaways trailer

Mssr Pattinson has a reputation for being malodorous, no?

I wish they’d make MY version of the story, wherein Joan Jett and Cherie Curie fall madly and passionately in love and run off together to live happily ever after.
sigh
A girl can dream…

Well according to Curie, she did sleep with Jett in those years ( also Sandy West ) as part of her Bowie-obsessed “experimentation” phase. Of course Cherie does comes off as more than a little narcissistic, so take that as you will.

I was an OBSESSED Joan Jett fan in high school. Also liked Lita Ford, but was madcrazyinsane over Joan. This’ll be interesting for me to see - I haven’t seen the Twilight stuff, so I don’t have the lingering negativity that was mentioned earlier about Stewart playing Jett.

This review from someone who seems fairly knowledgeable about the band suggests that it’s the kind of movie that starts strong and then runs out of gas about halfway through. The idea of a Runaways film turning into a “drug PSA” is a disappointment.

The review does makes an interesting point regarding the use of Fanning, someone known primarily as a child star, to comment on the sexualization of children that was a big part of the Runaways’s mystique (such as it was).

Credit is given to Fanning for an excellent performance (Stewart… not so much). And it sounds like Alia Shawkat, who I was excited to see despite the fictional nature of her character, gets kinda screwed on screentime.

I’m waiting on more reviews, but if I see more sentiments along the lines of Devin’s, I think I’ll pass on this one. I hate it when movies do a great job setting up a world and characters and then can’t stick the landing.

I saw this last night and not only liked the film, I liked the music too! That was surprising. I got into the fun and energy of the music. As someone who, as seen upthread, was NOT into this era/music at all, I thought it was a lot of fun, interesting, with good acting. Just as The Runaways influenced a lot of girls to become rockers, this movie about The Runaways is going to influence a lot of girls to become rockers. You could taste the potential influence coming off the screen. I grin with delight just thinking about it.

Most surprising of all was, during the ending credits, “Bad Reputation” was played and I sat there with a grin on my face thinking, this is a really fucking cool song! Yes, I know it’s a Joan Jett and the Blackhearts song. I knew enough to know that it was a JJ song when it started playing, but I never paid much attention to it at the time it was around. After seeing the movie, and getting used to the rock in the movie, then reading the “Where are they now?” blurbs and hearing about Joan’s being turned down by 23 record labels, starting her own label and having a #1 hit, none of which I ever knew, then hearing the song with only the black screen and credits made me pay attention. It’s simple, but it’s very effective, and I LOVED the way she sang “REPU-TAY-SHON” throughout. I just watched the video and can appreciate it more because the history is known to me now. It’s so dated that I’d rather hear the song without the video but I’m glad I saw it.

I definitely want to see that documentary now.
