Probably why Miracle Mile (1988) broke me so bad.

(“Miracle Mile” was really good end-of-the-world movie that had the misfortune to be completed after we stopped believing we were all going to die in a nuclear war. I, on the other hand, was still experiencing my end-of-the-world )

> For a guaranteed few tears at the end I’ll vote for _My Dog Skip_. Anyone who’s grown-up and loved a dog (and most everyone else besides) cannot keep a dry eye for this one. I’ve seen grown, tough-guy men’s men hiding watery eyes after this. Maybe not the most poignant film ever but bittersweet.

+100000000000
And not just at the end. In fact I’m not sure I ever could actually make it to the end. The part I usually can’t get past is around where the dog is old and the kid is now an adult and long since moved out, and the dog hangs around his old empty room, getting old and going blind, all his joys in the past. It may be intended as a movie about a dog, but the dog is a metaphor for all of us in this world who are unable to stop the flow of time. Ray Bradbury wrote a novel on a similar theme, _Farewell Summer_. If the boys in the town could make it up to the town hall clock and stop it, then time itself would stop, and childhood summer would go on forever.

Ill second \*\*My Dog Skip \*\*and **Sophies Choice**.

\*\*A.I. \*\* got me. . . . to a point:

When the kid is sitting underwater asking for his Mommy. If the fucking movie ended there, I would have left in tears . . . then they bring on fucking ROBIN WILLIAMS and the aliens, and the ending was ruined.

**Eraserhead** is depressing as hell.

Ill also nominate **Children of Man** , just for the premise alone.

Last night I saw **Maggie** starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, just 24 hours after we had to put down our 16 month old kitten. :(:(☹

If you watch it, (as you should, because it really is a very good movie) you’ll get what I mean with this mention.

I rented [Cocoon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocoon_(film)) as a college freshman in the late '80s. Despite the comedic content, the portrayal of elderly men and women struggling to come to terms with their mortality left me wrecked.

Remember the Twilight Zone episode [Kick the Can](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734583/)? Not one of the best for sure, but the last time I watched it I was the same age as Russell Collins was when he portrayed the old fart left behind when the rest of the residents of Sunnyvale Rest Home were restored to their youth. Ouch.

That had me enraged, I thought the movie would have done just as well with out it.

I put my vote in for _Charly_. It is a flawed film, but so powerful and sad.
