I’m not so sure about that. On the other board I’m on, there are people who post in all caps as well as capitalizing every word in a sentence. Either way, it’s disturbing.
I wish we have avatars though.
I occasionally read a message board based in my community - actually, the tri-county area. It’s got the mile-long sigs, animated gifs, people who quote massive posts just to say “LOL” or just add another animated gif to the mix. There are way too many racist, homophobic, hard-core ultra-right-wing morons who either can’t spell or who jump on others for minor typos. Then there’s the charmer who responds to every new female by asking “Are you chubby?”
I joined just before moving here, hoping to maybe make friends. Now I just pray I never encounter any of these people. The only reason I keep going back is when I want specific information about the area - recommendations for doctors or restaurants or things like that. Or if I really want to feel good about myself…
Yep, I’m having the same trouble with a forum I have visited daily for the last four years. Although, I generally relax my spelling and punctuation when posting there.
And it’s apparently not even that if you’re on the pregnancy and nursing boards…
Score!
The only comic book board I can stand is CBR (Comic Book Resources). There’s some idiots there of the “Woolverine iz the BEST CHARACTAR EVER” type, but there’s enough literate posters with a sense of humor to balance out the weenies.
IMDB and Youtube are filled with the lowest scum.
I was on imdb recently, advising a poster that he really shouldn’t be asking somebody to illegally procure a script copy from a work in production.
The reply I got was,
Now, here on the SDMB, we might have an argument about the morality and legality involved (in Cafe Society or Great Debates, I guess), but at least it would include the use of the Shift key, and some kind of actual logical argument.
So I, too, have been spoiled.
I’ve gone to Yahoo! Answers a few times to look around, and then left before I got the urge to slam my head into my keyboard repeatedly. I’m not brave enough to look at the legendary 4chan.
I pretty much hang out here, and on Craftster.org’s forums daily (I’m LaughingLark over there). And if I need some unbridled snark, I go to Wonkette and just lurk.
When I want to learn something factual or get an educated opinion on something, this board is my first stop. I don’t have much to add to the board, but I sure like to be here.
Wait…there are other boards out there?
Who knew? I get enough education and entertainment at this one, thank you very much.
My favorite image is a Jeff MacNelly drawing done for a Dave Berry column: there’s the document pinned to the wall, and the writer there loading a shotgun with ammunition labeled 12-gauge comma load…
Aieee… it starts badly, and then hits a previously unimaginable low point right after your post.
The worst part -the simply *worst *part - is that you just know the poster after you will manage to procreate, bringing forth more creatures just like her.
**What does this even mean? ** :smack: Try as I might, I can’t even parse the PS part, let alone most of the full post.
The worst part is that thread isn’t the worst one, not by a long shot! I’ll spare you the adolescent boy asking if his jizzing in the jacuzzi might have made his virginal mother pregnant!
For no logical reason that I can think of, you suddenly made me think of the Sims 2 forums. Maybe it’s just the overwhelming number of idiots there, I don’t know.
I do remember trying to use it to get some kind of useful answer to a problem I was having, and giving up because the majority of posts/posters were making me lose hope for the future of humanity. :smack:
<pats Lynn on the arm> Well, if it will make you feel better…
I gave up on allnurses.com when the owner of it made everyone play nice–NOT like they do at SDMB, but as in, “don’t ever say anything that may not be conventional or nice or considerate of other people’s feelings or Ye Shall Be Banned.” Note that I wasn’t banned; I just up and left. The Pit is such a brilliant move on SDMB’s part–I hope TPTB know that. Example from nsg board: you couldn’t post that you felt that BSNs were superior in skill to diploma nurses or the like. Now, I completely agree that the point is debatable, but there was no debate allowed. Saying that causes hurt feewings, so out go you.
The other board started out cool–intelligent, capable nurses, but it was small and like most female groups, it steered toward consensus and is now a mutual admiration society. Still has some really smart people on it, I just got bored. If anyone is interested in it, I can send the url in a PM. I bowed out shortly after I was taken to task (not by the administrator) by the majority for daring to express common feelings that morbidly obese pts are difficult to take care of…
It is worth a look see, though–as a resource. Lemme know, WhyNot, if you’re at all interested.
And yes, sadly, the religious glurge (and I mean the schmaltzy, oversentimentalized, Precious Moments type stuff) was rampant on both boards. There is a distinct minority of Creationists as well(sorry but I find that horrible). There are nurses who cannot name all 50 states or ID them on a map (irrelevant, really, but for some reason, this REALLY bothers me on a level I can’t quite define). Not all nurses are intellectually curious.
Nope, as Juliana said, some posts are in ALL CAPS AS WELL. For some reason, even though I interpret all caps as yelling, it doesn’t bother me as much as capitalizing every damn word.
Next you’ll tell me old patients who’ve spent their whole life cranky and still have more strength than the nurses are complicated
Something Awful is pretty good.
Hurm. Yeah, the SDMB is one of the very first forums I started reading regularly (I lurked for a year before joining and look at my membership date) and all the others just dropped away for me. Now I don’t even know what other forums are out there, I don’t look at “blogs” and generally ignore any comment section on site.
Have any of you seen this now garbage they have on CNN in the afternoon - Rick Sanchez (the used-car salesman) reading through rambling word salad that pops up on the screen for some reason? Lordy, I’ve stopped watching it altogether after 3 p.m.
I even get annoyed at my few friends on IM for thinking I’m wasting my time with proper caps and punctuation. I write for a living, people! Practice makes perfect! What makes you so special?
Oh, heavens, never that!
