People in this country spend far too much time worrying about how cool they look. Many of these same people wore mullets in the '80s.

That’s all I have to say about that.

Certain things are fucking eternally cool. There are trends, lame fads like mullets and pastel colors and the Ray Charles-designed Chevy HHR, but there are certain things that are just archetypes of cool.

James Dean with hair brushed back, a cigarette dangling from his mouth, in an American convertible sports car. Jazz. Black leather, tinted glasses, and motorcycles. A classy three-piece suit in dark solid colors.

This shit never dies. Fads will come and fads will go - certain things stay cool forever.

I don’t know if we’re so excessive that way. There are one or two people here who often use words like “dorks” and “dweebs”, but that’s about it. (Actually I thought there was only one such person until I read this thread).

Right. For that, you need James Dean with a German sports car.
I’ll never, ever, ever understand people who buy brand new Ford Tauruses for 18,000 dollars when half of that could get you a used BMW or a vintage Mustang or a Jeep or something else that looked cool and made a statement. The Ford Taurus is a dowdy and boring car, why the hell would someone spend a fortune on one? Do you care that much about it being new? It’ll be dirty and smell like your laundry detergent or your cigarettes or your kids within a year. Mechanical problems? It’ll probably be dripping oil after 5,000 miles. Jesus, people, is the new car smell THAT intoxicating?
Seems pretty obvious why people buy Tauruseses. Because they want a simple reliable reasonably roomy car that will give them probably 7-10 years of trouble-free operation. They don’t leak oil after 5,000 miles. $18,000 isn’t a fortune since most cars seem to be over $20,000 now, and if you wait until they’re a year or two old, you can easily get a Taurus for $12,000.

A $9,000 BMW, vintage Mustang, or Jeep would likely involve quite a bit of maintainence. Maybe good for a second car for weekends, but not for daily use and transporting the kids to school or soccer practice.
