Well, the Bible sees nothing wrong with slavery or rape (at least of single women), and it’s pretty loose on murder.
Murder: one of the Ten Commandments is “Thou shalt not kill,” but Mosaic Law imposes the death penalty for all kinds of minor offenses like gathering sticks on the Sabbath, or mouthing off to your parents, or being a rape victim within city limits. And God ordered the Israelites to massacre every man, woman, child, and infant in the cities they conquered in the Promised Land.
Slavery: no problemo under Mosaic law. Hebrew slaves were supposed to be freed after a certain time, but non-Hebrew slaves were slaves forever, passed on to the children of their owners. And apparently any slave could be beaten within an inch of his life, as long as he survived a day or two.
Rape: as mentioned above, Mosaic law called for a betrothed/married woman raped within city limits to be executed —the rationale being she should have cried for help, never mind that she had a knife to her throat or was first rendered unconscious. And of course, young women were considered spoils of war during the conquest of Canaan.
There are a few laws against rape, but they are clearly there not to protect women, but to protect the woman’s husband or father, i.e. to ensure that any children a married woman has are her husband’s, and that a young girl remains a virgin so that her father gets full value when he marries her off (and she will be executed if she can’t prove she is a virgin to her new husband).
Death penalty for raping a woman with a husband or fiance. Gotta protect the men. But rape a virgin, and you get to marry her, after paying a fine to her father. And since polygamy is fine, you can do that as often as you like. Rape an unattached woman who is not a virgin, and apparently there is no penalty – no Mosaic law I can find covers it. Nor can I find a condemnation of rape of any kind in the New Testament.
So that’s what the source of all morality says: don’t eat shellfish, don’t covet your neighbor’s ass, but you’re welcome to have as many slaves, and rape as many virgins, as you can afford.
