The show must go on! Real-world devastating events and live broadcasts/events

The only reason I didn’t mention the names (in addition to Bob Richards, radio personality Nan Wyatt was murdered by her husband, TV anchor Mary Phelan was killed in a car accident, and TV anchor Dick Ford’s son was involved in a murder) was because I didn’t think they’d mean anything outside St. Louis.

Another example: when St. Louis Cardinals announcer Jack Buck was too ill to announce during the 2002 season, his son, Joe Buck, substituted on many games. The night Jack Buck died (in fact, there were media reports earlier in the day that he had already died) Joe Buck called the game, left directly for the hospital, and announced Jack Buck’s death only an hour after the game had ended.

 I grew up in the Lou, and remember him. (IIRC there was a commercial where everyone thought it was going to rain, but then the neighbors saw him washing his car, so they knew it wasn’t going to rain).

I can’t believe I’d never heard of this before now.
