The Signifying Douchebag? [Henry Gates arrest - racism?]

As I suggested earlier, more information is going to come out of this.

The arresting officer is a police academy expert on racial profiling and has taught classes on it at the Lowell Police Academy after being hand-picked for the job.

Gates would do well to cut his loses and apologize.

It’s an amusing coincidence but really proves nothing about his actions during Gates’ questioning and arrest.

What is Gates losing exactly?

Bullshit.

I don’t think the cop was a racist; just a petty asshole who couldn’t stand to be wrong. He still had no need to arrest Gates.

You know what this needs? A calm head to mediate between the two and get BOTH to apologize to each other so both can save face and everyone can move on.

I was thinking about who that person should be and I realized… “a wise Latina” would address the issue best. (Actually, I think an Asian Chick could be even better, but “wise Latina” is funnier and more apropos of Current Events).

Then why was he unable to avoid ‘having’ to arrest Prof. Gates? Wouldn’t his training prevent him from being ‘confused’ as to why Prof. Gates seemed upset to see him at his door?

Wouldn’t his training allow him to be able to defuse the situation, instead it blew up.

It means he knows where the line is drawn and Gates was firmly planted on the wrong side of it being an asshole. What Gates said was every bit a disturbance.

Now lets look at the other side. Wouldn’t Gates, a Harvard Professor who has dedicated his life to African American experiences, understand how hateful and wrong his actions were?

Oh, and the situation WAS diffused, the person disturbing the peace was removed.

Doesn’t look too defused to me - it’s been all over the news for days.

Credibility and respect.

Given his tirade Gates may very well have done something stupid. The fact that someone like Obama would weigh into it without knowing anything about the situation gives it more attention.

He’s a 58-year-old Harvard professor who walks with a cane and just got home from a long trip. What, other than yell, was he going to do? I’d love some details. Do you think he was going to attack the bigger, younger, back-uped, probably-armed cop? I doubt it.

As far as credibility and respect goes, you don’t seem like you were a very big fan before.

If the situation had nothing to do with racial profiling (as Gates and Obama claim) then being an expert in the topic is not going to help. It just adds credibility to the notion that Gates was arrested, not because he was black but because he was behaving badly, and would be considered to be doing so even if he were white or Latino or Asian or a Serbo-Croation cross-dresser with ADHD.

Gates thinks he’s hot shit because he’s at Hahvahd and knows how to play the race card. Obama fell for it. So will most of the MSM.

Shodan

Or you have a community wondering why this guy is teaching about racial profiling. It can cut both ways. Cop supporters point and say “See, he can’t be racist; he teaches about racial profiling.” Cop doubters can point and say, “See, they have a racial profiling course and they have this jerkoff teaching it.”

So which is it, does the course support the man, or does the man undermine the course?

Don’t know the statistics on attacks based on people losing their cool and I don’t care. He was well on his way to doing something stupid like poke an officer when he was arrested. Beyond that, when someone publicly shits on an officer and then impugns his character then I support that person’s removal as a public nuisance.

I’m not a fan based on this event. I don’t know if I’ve ever read or viewed his work. I consume a lot of historic information as a hobby.

Ditto from this dyed in the wool Obama supporter.

Not p-p-poking!

:Faints:

If we could get arrested for being dicks in our own homes, how many of us would be walking around free?

Obama stepped in it huge when he weighed in on this. Even if he’s right, he’s just going to froth the trogs into a cop/military/jesus/american way frenzy, and I’ve had more than my fill of that shit the last few years.

You know, I always thought that a man’s right to be free from government intrusion in his own home was one of those sacred American rights, but apparently it’s not that important to a lot of people.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the U.S. has the most incarcerated people in the entire world. Apparently, if a cop says you did something bad, it’s case closed.

An accusation of being a pedophile is similar in its damaging consequences as being called a racist. Both accusations are immediately believed by many people and are difficult to disprove.

Bringing someone in for public disturbance doesn’t mean they have to prosecute. It means they brought in a hot-head who needed to cool off.QUOTE]
By definition the purpose of an arrest is to bring the arrestee before a court or otherwise secure the administration of the law.
