Terrific trip report! I hope you’re back on you pins soon.
I really blew it by not going today. Near perfect, I would think.
Crazy shit going on up here. Guy buried in an avalanche at Squaw (alive) and another one in an earlier incident (dead), and two people killed at Kirkwood when snow slid off a roof and buried them.
News said 4 deaths so far…
Yah, it was an insane weekend around Tahoe. I was able to go up Friday to Northstar - it was snowing hard all day long, but there were lots of people there. Everything tracked-out by 11:30. Going home that afternoon/evening westbound on 80 a massive line of cars going eastbound. Caltrans did a great job opening and keeping that road open.
A friend went to Sierra at Tahoe Sunday - waded thru bumper-to-bumper traffic to get there, only to be turned away by a full parking lot, and had to return home empty handed.
Seems the storms last week brought a lot of people out to the mountains that had been holding-off until new snow arrived. I guess with a crush like that there will be incidents.
This is simply Tragic.
Another reason I only ski Heavenly. I know all the ‘secret’ spots to park and keep a Handicrap placard I found in the junkyard as an absolute last resort. :o
As someone who has lots of friends in adaptive ski programs, that’s pretty despicable. Toss the illegal placard.
Another storm coming into New England, we’ll be skiing the next two weekends. I hope we haven’t missed out on the best of VTah powdah.
Word.
Serious high speed, locked edge, tipped and coiling tele-carving on the ice the last couple of days. When your knee and knuckles are skimming, you know you’re having a good time – one hell of a good time!
The down side is that the coating on the lens of the goggles that I bought this season are toast from the tiny shards. Three months mostly on snow and all’s file, but only half a dozen hours on ice and kaputski. I’ll try soaking it in hot water for a few hours to try to wash the coating off, and if so, then skipy-fandango, but if not, then I’ll see if I can glue some foam on an old goggles frame that has a non-coated lens in decent shape.
Amazing weekend up at Jay (northern VT)! Six feet of snow in the last week, everything was skiing great. Cold and windy at times, but that kept some of the people away. Even when the Tramside lifts were on wind hold the lines for the other chairs was only 15 minutes. And when the reopened the lines completely disappeared in the afternoon.
When Jay is good, it’s really good. Steep, tight trees and soft bumps!
Went up yesterday, it rained, snowed, blew, was sunny for a few minutes. A little bit of everything.
Looking at the web cam today, it dumped huge overnight and is still dumping!
Woohoo! Good times are coming…
Just returned from Deer Valley. It was exceptional.
I am a far less experienced skier than the rest of you, so I stuck to the greens/blues. My son and daughter enjoyed bombing the blacks, but said the bowls were chewed up. All 3 days of skiing were in high 20s-low 30s. Had a couple of inches the first and 3d day, and bright sunshine the 2d. Tho it was warming up as we left, and I heard the resorts were to close soon. The worst thing was the bottom of Success - which our condo was right off of, was a slushy mess at the end of the day. The absolute worst part of every day was trying to get off the slope at the end.
A lot of (too many?) kids, and OMG the $$$ on display everywhere! But we really enjoyed it - and my wife appreciated the low altitude. I thought it was really nice, but wasn’t sure why it is considered all that much better than other nice mountains. The ski-only was nice (IMO).
We would gladly return, except that I think we might head to Whistler/Blackcomb next year…
Got in a day of lift skiing at Sugarbush on Saturday with my sister’s family, then a backcountry day at Bolton with just my wife. A good weekend, it’s been too long since we’ve done a good backcountry tour. That might be it for the main season for us; we’re getting ready for a hiking vacation now. Probably come back for a weekend at Tuckerman and then Slackfest.
Freed the mind of an alpine skier today.
They lost half of their bindings?
Yup.
Bob Beattie has passed away.
Unbelievably good conditions at Loch Lomond today (top end of the Blues Highway 61). The calendar says 8 April, but the snow says 8 February. The hill expects to be open for another couple of weekends, and with a bit of luck might make it to May (I know, I know, but I’m a dreamer and thankfully so are the folks who own the hill). Here are a couple of vids from this afternoon.

Three skier triggered avalanches in Tuckerman this weekend. The advisories were clear, Considerable Danger but the bozos have to ski. :dubious: Only one significant injury.
ooooo! I know that feeling late in the day, snow is less than perfect, legs are making their thoughts clearly known, the bar, sauna or spa are calling very loudly!
Not the time for attack but you’ve still got to keep your technique in check because when you don’t that’s when accidents happen. (probably even more so with telemark?)
I missed my Easter skiing this year (had a long-haul trip somewhere very different instead) but where we would have been still have some cracking conditions on the glacier and with a good base will probably have good conditions right through to July.
Roll on Christmas and new year. only another 8 months to go.
We got some unusual April snow on the 3rd and 18th. And not just an inch or 2, but like 8 or more. Some folks did go skiing (I didn’t)
Yesterday we hit 70 F so that seem unlikely anymore,
