If the behavior of individual Southern Baptist churches scales up, it doesn’t matter what name they pick. About half of them will hate it and refuse to change, and both factions will pick some doctrinal nit to fulminate about. After a while, there will be two churches, and each side will claim they kicked the other out. ---

But speaking as someone who attends a Southern Baptist church, it’s going to take a hell of a lot more than a name change to solve the problem. ---

He was first a minister in the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. and then affiliated with the Progressive National Baptist Convention. I was raised in SBC churches and while there weren’t any openly hostile attitudes toward minorities it was still a pretty lily-white group of people. That was in the 60’s - 80’s. Things have changed somewhat in recent years but no that much. After integrating 47 years ago, Baylor University, the largest school associated with the SBC, has only about 7% African American enrollment. ---
