# The Spanish-Moroccan War?  WTF, and why am I amused?

Some of us are old enough to remember that one.

Video of a thousand or so old men, women and kids form Morocco marching into Spanish Sahara, like a giant Walk-a-thon for Breast Cancer, but emitting u-ulations instead of PTA chat.

Cut to a shot of swaggering Spanish Forign Legionares waiting for them to arrive.

“Spanish Foreign Legion?”  
“Yeah, that’s for guys too nasty to get into the French Foreign Legion”  
“Oh shit - those women and kids are fucked!”

However, once they did arrive, Juan Carlos, always grateful for any opportunity to be seen doing the exact opposite of whatever Franco would have done, yeilded to the populist mass of Moroccans; who were promptly bussed back home and replaced by a bunch of scruffy Scotsmen and Texans with heavy mineral extraction equipment.

I’m genuinely glad these two neighbors can resolve their disputes so bloodlessly, but, remebering “EL Cid” with Charlton Heston, I can’t help wondering if the actual war it was based on was fought with rubber swords as well.

Nothing profound to add except that international squabbles are usually interesting to me. Been to Spain & love it & their people. Morocco is on the list.
