Og, I hope not. John Goodman looking soooo much like the anime Pops Racer is nice, but having anime-grade vocal synchronization would make me consider actually going to see it in movin’ pitcher house.
Which is going to come first, btw, live-action Gigantor, live-action Astro Boy, or live-action Marine Lad?
Unknown to JThunder Racer X is secretly Speed’s long lost brother Rex.
Nitpick: Marine BOY.
Thank you. That’s what I was going to point out.
I owe you a piece of oxy-gum.
Huh. I think I whooshed a mod…
Yep, the mod has been whooshed. At five times the speed of sound, I’d say.
Cartoon reconceptualized as live-action is tricky stuff. I’d be worried about turning the film into a graphics FX demo. Then again if anyone’s gonna do it, might as well be the Wachowskis
BTW let’s remember that a lot of the extra cheesiness we recall from the originals was in fact a product of the translation/westernization effort of the time. This time around what cheez is there is on purpose.
That seals the deal for me…that’s what I want to see–the cartoon as live action.
I don’t think any movie since Dick Tracy has done a very good job of interpreting a cartoon feel into live-action. That is what I’m looking forward to in Speed Racer.
He’s a demon on wheels!!!
“Trixie, take a memo. RE: X, Racer… Hey… wait a minute…”
I’ve got a group of friends going to see Speed Racer in IMAX on Friday. I don’t really expect to see a good story. I don’t think it’ll exactly sweep the Oscars.
I do expect to see lots of pretty visuals, so I think IMAX is the way to go.
I think you can guess where my vote goes.
As for Speed Racer; despite my severe lust for the ever-so-doable Ms. Ricci, I’ll wait 'til it’s on cable… I hated the anime.
Yes you did, which doubles the funny! Well played.
Just roped a few pals into seeing this on Sunday… But we’re gonna do it RIGHT!
As in, drink a shitload of red bull, get a kilo of pick n’ mix, and go to an early show packed with screaming kids.
I’m guessing my brain will do the whole Scanners thing.
I told my wife that this movie is playing at the local IMAX theater here in Knoxville.
Her response - “Ooh, let’s go!”
$42 later… we’re going. I had no idea that she wanted to see this movie enough to spend $42 on it, but since it is Mothers day this weekend, I could hardly argue. Wouldn’t be sporting. Or wise.
What the f has happened to Christina Ricci? I can’t tell if she’s like totally emaciated, or if she’s had a lot of plastic surgery. She looks really, really different.
I should have mentioned that I saw the entire film in IMAX and about five minutes of it in digital. The digital print is pretty impressive (since it’s all CG anyway, the translation to digital projection is seamless).
Now for a bit of full disclosure. I work with, but not for the IMAX corporation.
Having said that, if you get a chance to see it in IMAX you really should. The visuals are simply astonishing. I stand by the statement that you’ll either love or hate the film (no middle ground here), but you’ll come away from the experience wowed by the visuals.
One caveat - it may be too much for little kids, especially in IMAX. Visually, it’s just a whole lot to take in.
All of the above is just my personal opinion. As I said, I don’t work for or speak for IMAX.
I’d be happy to see Marine Boy on DVD.
I don’t think I can watch it if it’s all like the commercials…
Is the whole movie filmed & edited in “A-D-D-vision™” like the commercials, or can your brain sometimes process most of the action going on on-screen?
It reminds me of being on a sugar high from Skittles.
The hopping on a playground merry-go-round then spinning until I throw up said Skittles.
That being said, I would go if someone was to treat me. I’m curious as to how it could be worse than the actual anime.
