Make that “I’d rather be disappointed with the movie than the book.”
Sheesh.

My in-laws live in the Bangor, ME, area. One of the first things I was shown was his house. It’s Victorian w/ ironwork spider webs in the windows.
He supports the local youth and college sports programs. He had a Little League park built in the area behind his house. And one Thanksgiving-time we went to a women’s basketball game, and he was sitting in one of the box seats to the right of us.
I’ve never met him, but at least up until his accident he went around town like an average Joe.
P.S. - I’ve only read “The Stand” and “The Green Mile”. Both outstanding. The latter is the only fiction book I’ve read that made me cry.
The Canadians. They walk among us. William Shatner. Michael J. Fox. Monty Hall. Mike Meyers. Alex Trebek. All of them Canadians. All of them here.
I was in a melancholy mood when I saw the movie and was crying at the very beginning. It is a sad book.
I am a longtime SK fan and with the exception of some of his most recent work I have read them all. I’m going to go with what seems like the status quo here and say The Stand was the best book but The Shining was by far the scariest. However in regard to The Shining I think SK was making the point that the house was the source of the evil and was manipulating the man. However in the Movie Mr. Kubrick wanted to make it the Man going crazy and Just imagining the things that he saw and eventually drove him insane. Except for the element of the boy’s ESP ability the movie contained nothing of the supernatural. Even though The Shining is one of my all time favorite movies I think I prefer SK’s version of the story.
The worst Stephen King adaptation to movie has to be The Running Man. It’s been a while, so I can’t remember if they actually had the audacity to put “Stephen King’s” The Running Man on posters, etc.
The actual story would make an excellent movie, IMHO.
“The Running Man” was written by King as Richard Bachman. And the movie poster shown on The Internet Movie Database only features Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Another story very similar to The Stand is Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon.
I love SK, particularly his older work. The short story The Boogieman scared the crap out of me for years.
I was a little disappointed with books like Gerald’s Game, Rose Madder, and I didn’t like the last installment of the Dark Tower series either. I am finshing up Hearts in Atlantis, which I have enjoyed quite a bit.
I haven’t read Tom Gordon yet. Should I?
For those of you about to see the Green Mile, IMHO it was a fantastic book. The book tapes were even better.
If you ever go on a drive through the Nevada desert, or any other - Desperation (with Steve Himself reading it) will keep you awake!
I have everyone of his books, and you folks are right – most are great, but Gerald’s Game sucked. In Needful Things I would have sworn that he came to the small town I was living in and met the people himself. Described them to a ‘T’!
Thanks to TLC for the insightful bio!
