Don’t worry, Clare. The Mods and Admin types close threads around here. Typically based upon whether it’s in the appropriate forum, or whether it’s just plain appropriate (extremely offensive posts are closed, such as ones that are extremely racist, or offer advice on circumventing the law).
When it runs out of steam, it just kind of fades away all on its own. I call it magic; I don’t trust those techy-types to tell me the truth. Stuff about electrons and bandwidth.
Whoever heard of such drivel?
Spiny Norman: I don’t have to provide a cite, as everyone in their right mind (that’s all of us lefties, for you heretics) knows it to be the truth. You see, we Great Debaters have accepted the Truth of the Word of Cecil as Gospel, and any debate by naysayers are just people who haven’t opened their eyes, minds and hearts to The Truth.
That’s why the Straight Dope hired a Dutch moderator: we’re completely immune to cheese smell! We’re born in it! I use a piece of Edammer as showering soap, and I brush my teeth with Gouda! So there!
Yes, it is just that simple. However - that does not mean that there is not an observed increase in server time used, even though the SQL text seems straightforward. You have to rely on the personal experience of the Moderators and Administrators who use the function, even though the SQL action looks simple.
One thing you didn’t see when you looked at the scripts is that there is also some error checking that goes on before a thread is moved. The permissions need to be checked (of course, just like in an Open or Close action), but there are also the following actions carried out:
Can the destination forum contain posts?
Checking the source forum permissions.
Checking the destination forum permissions.
Checking to see if this thread is being returned to a forum it’s already been in.
…and so on.
Oh yeah…I’m supposed to answer that. I was reading it out of the source code for the Board; I will look at it again tonight to see why it might be an issue.
ColdFire,
I can only imagine you haven’t experienced a true onslaught of Dorset Blue Vinney!
They sell it in tiny little triangles, which I thought was a bit mean, until I tried it!
It’s a cheese not so much for eating, as for hand-to-hand-combat. I recommend a mask.
I haven’t seen it lately in our supermarket - perhaps it killed too many people. Who likes the stuff? - that’s what I’d like to know!
Oops. It’s a vBulletin 2.x thing only, where it checks to see if the automatic “Moved Thread Redirect” is present or not (a really cool feature in version 2.x), and removes it if it is.
