The stupidest thing you ever heard a Christian say

The stupidest thing I ever heard a Christian say?

“Jesus died for your sins.”

Overheard in Borders Books once:

“And I’ve spoken to hundreds of people over the years: imams and rabbis and atheists and agnostics and not one, repeat, not one, has ever been able to prove to me that the Ressurection didn’t happen.”

Zev Steinhardt

Well, Jeanne Dixion is not on the air since she’s been dead for years, but Miss Cleo and John Edward are kept on the air by the same folks who churches in business–atheists don’t buy into that supernatural malarkey, but guess who does?

i have been known to go “xtian bashing” on occasion.
and i have been labelled a sexist, racist, ageist… probably others too.

Christian bashing, if done right, is fun. But the targets are chosen, not because of their faith, but because of their mentality.

I have fairly intersting conversations with a devout christian collegue, usually to discover our core ideas and beliefs are the same, just different words.

Stupidest thing out of a xtian mouth… “Have you found Jesus?”
cor, didn’t know the bugger was missing.

slightly off topic
To balance it out, stupidest thing out of a pagans mouth… Blessed be. ([disclaimer] this is only stupid when some little sabrina tree-hugger says it, some people seem to be able to say it and be sincere – i spose thats how many ‘christian’ comments are, the ones that have and will be be quoted usually come out of some dumbass’s nouth, while the real intelligent one is out in TRW doing something worthwile. This applies to all sects/cults/religions/message boards.[/disclaimer]

end off topic

Blessed be what?

oh boy, just re-read that post (really should start using preview more often…

is not meant to be interpretted as belittling, ridiculing or attacking a specific group or culture. It is a ‘sport’ to make people re-evaluate their ideas and beliefs.

IMHO If you have never questioned your belief, never felt it might be lacking… you don’t really believe in it. An ideology (sp?) that can be battered, bruised, run over and generally have the hell beaten out of it, and can still bounce back and apply itself… now That is something to believe in.

new stupidest comment to make the post worthwhile: “Accept the lord Jesus Christ into your heart, and you will go to heaven”
paraphrased from the ideology, but it has been said to me like that… despite the fact that i am (generally, i really do try ;)) a respectable human being - no murders yet, i stay under my weekly sin quota… but i am still going to hell, hmph.

A couple of months ago I went to the funeral of the wife of a coworker. They’re some kind of fundamentalists. The minister said that heaven is not some kind of nebulous cloud, but rather a physical place that is 2 miles wide, 2 miles deep, and 2 miles high (I forget the exact mileage, but it was a small number).
What is heaven – condos?

The minister also seriously trashed the deceased, who was not the most stable person. The minister said, “Many times I asked God, ‘why did you put [the deceased] in my life?’ And now God has given me an answer. It’s to remind us that our problems are fleeting.”
Hallelujah, the annoying bitch is dead.

Sticking strictly to the OP, a line I have heard several times IRL:

“God put the fossils there to test our faith”

Well, I seriously doubt any devout Christians are calling Miss Cleo, since that would be contrary to the teachings of their faith. But if your beef is with any and all religious thought, then go to GD and start a “Non-atheists are fools thread.” Singling out Christians as somehow being more ignorant than average is clearly untrue, unfair, and makes you look like a bigot.

Actually, just remembered another contender:

“…Jesus deliberately turned the water into non-alcoholic wine, because drinking is wrong…”

Maybe Jeanne Dixon is now feeding John Edward his lines?

Instead of being born again why not just grow up?

The stupidest would be every argument I’ve heard asserting that Hitler would have gone to heaven if, even at the last moment, he accepted Jesus as his personal savior.

This?

The stupidest comment I ever heard was a coworker, after I mentioned that homosexuals are born as such (I’d mentioned this website and Esprix’s ATGG threads and how great it was for learning things), said, “That’s just what they tell themselves because they know they’re doing something wrong.” I quickly got off the subject, since I didn’t want to start a religious debate in the middle of the office with a close-minded fundamentalist. I’m just glad I telecommute most days.

Devout Co-worker- Those muslims(actually he called em Arabs) over in Iraq need to be dealt with.

Me- Why do you say that?

Devout Co-Worker- Well, they kill innocent people. Look at Suddam, he dropped bombs on his own people.

Me- What do you think we should do then?

DCW- Nuke em all. Just bomb every inch of the country except the oil wells.

Me- Kind of hypocritical no? Us commiting genocide to stop some of them from commiting genocide? I guess we didn’t learn anything from WWII and that guy… You know, Hitler. (for emphasis I paused)

DCW- Shows what you know, dummy. Hitler was WWI, we dealt with the Japs in WWII.

Me-

He goes on and on to tell me how the muslims are not people since they choose to worship Satan instead of God, and that they deserve to all die. There are no innocent civilians he says. They are all Godless terroists.

Whenever I hear this, I wonder if the speaker has read Genesis, which has two completely different versions of creation in it; both cannot be entirely true.

A great book (fiction of course) on this question is *Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal

  • by Christopher Moore.

But…but then Saddam must be good, because he was killing Godless terrorists… but…but…

<head explodes>

Yesterday I heard Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz say

“American soldiers are nothing but mercenaries and they will be defeated”

I’d say thats pretty stupid.

Some gems from former students of mine:

“When God created Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, he meant for them to reproduce normally and not clone themselves.”

(From a later version of the same paper): “A person is more than flesh and blood. Each person possesses a soul. When a person is cloned, a soul is not established, leaving that child the victim of society.”

“The Bible is the best source for history because just about everyone who reads it will believe it.”

How about I start a thread titled, “The stupidest thing you ever heard a gay person say” or, “The stupidest thing you ever heard an Arizonian say” or “The stupidest thing I’ve ever heard a black woman say” and see how nice of a reception I get from people from Arizona, gay people or black women.
