This was obviously annoying Peter Alliss, a BBC golf commentator as when watching the final day last night I was amused to hear him say “Oh, shut up!” when he heard someone shout “In the Hole” The OP was short but I agree with **JM**. It made perfect sense and most people who were watching The Masters would have known what it was about. ---

If golf-watching people think it was a worthy thread and want to post in it, I don’t mind reopening it. I didn’t really see it as having much discussion potential, even if it did make sense to someone, but I’m not a golf fan so I’m not as adept at extracting enjoyment from very small amounts of entertainment. 😉 If I see three posts after this by people saying they want to post in that thread, I’ll open it back up. Five, and I’ll do so in a sheepish and contrite fashion. Seven, and I’ll ban the lot of you, unruly bastards. ---

That’s as tiresome as hearing “You da man!” on every drive. But while we’re on the subject of fan noise at golf, what makes golf so special? A quarterback is expected to throw the ball 40 yards downfield at a moving target, timed to coincide with the receiver’s arrival, while 3 or more defensive lineman try to tear his head off, and 80,000 fans make all the noise they want. Meanwhile in golf some guy is trying to sink a lousy 4 inch putt, and the announcers have to whisper because the delicate flower can’t be disturbed, the poor baby needs to concentrate. Grow a pair, would ya? ---

If football was played in total silence but just as the QB was about to throw, someone close by yelled at him, it would be off-putting. I bet if golf were played in a constant noise, the players would be able to handle that also. ---

But then no one would want to spectate, because you wouldn’t be able to see anything or go anywhere. ---

To me, it’s not that “OMG Someone made noise at a golf tournament” and I do from time to time think golfers should be a little more tolerant - but that the comment is so ridiculous and trite. Yes, I’m the ball’s going to go “in the hole” on that drive on the 412 yard par 4. Wait, in the hole? I had no idea all along that’s we were trying to do! ---

Maybe they could just start whispering "Scoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooore! instead. I don’t really care one way or the other but since **Giraffe** is polling to see whether or not to re-open the thread, I vote yes. Although I don’t generally care a thing about golf (or manga, _The Lord of the Rings_, the right way to barbeque, most of U.S. politics, science fiction, kitty pictures, MMPs, Terry Pratchett, etc.), I occasionally open such a thread anyway and find something interesting and new. So I don’t think the thread should have been closed simply because not many understood what it meant; there could have been other reasons to just not that one. Am I number seven? ---
