I like some songs by the Hip, but I’m hardly a mega fan.
I’m that way about the majority of music I listen to though, there’s very few bands/singers that I have most of their discography or any more than a few songs at all.

Damn skippy.
Did someone say “Leafssuck fans”? There are Leafssuck fans in this thread? cracks knuckles
I didn’t know that. I had always figured it was the Canadians saying “Look at me, I’m a Canadian…in America!” and thought it was odd.
I never noticed it at the Canadian gigs. But I guess it could be that it looks completely normal in Canada and a little out of place here.
kung fu lola, I had a boyfriend who was/is a mega-Leafs fan. We always watched Hockey Night in Canada, so I became a fan as well. It even hurt me to type Detroit Red Wings. ::cracks knuckles right back at ya::
Well, we’re still pissed down here for youse guys foisting Anne Murray on us, but… /s
I remember my brother bringing home a “Chilliwack” album in the early 70’s. Wonder what happened to them? But Rush, Neil Young, et. al, make up for that pretty much. The T-hip are OK, I bought the “fully completely” CD when it came out and I played it a lot. I like the song “100th Meridian”.
Sorry, we have an inferiority complex so sometimes we overcompensate.
: looks down at her pants :
Speak fer yerself, mister!
Hey, I like Anne Murray! Celine Dion though… there’s very little of hers I like.
They’re still around. Heard them advertised to play at one of the local casinos a few months back (this one has a lot of bands like that, they were advertising April Wine around the same time).
I saw them at Hamilton Copps Collesium on New Years eve, I think in 2003. Everyone was smoking weed around us, which surprised me. But it was fun and would love to see them again if they ever made it socal.
Yeah! I found the album “All Over You” from '72. I think he won a passle of them at a Hockey Game. Probably smuggled in from Thunder Bay, those rascals. April Wine, they are Canadian?? Or just a guest
Canadian. Originally from Halifax, NS.
The band I wouldn’t mind seeing in concert though is The Stampeders. Dad got me hooked on them.
I have a copy of “Day For Night” that I really enjoy listening to, but I’ve never pursued more of their music. Er, based on me liking that one, should I?
When I was in college, my roommate was a HUGE Sarah McLachlan fan. I maintain the song Possession was written about him. So when Sarah came to town he scored third row seats and convinced me to go, since I had a car and he didn’t. A few weeks later, a Hip show was announced the same night. I’m a far bigger Tragically Hip fan, but a promise is a promise.
The night of the show, we were in the third row, and these five guys come in and sit in front of us for the opening act. Then they leave before Sarah comes out. I think to myself “that’s odd, folks would get second row seats and then not use them”.
After the show I mention it to my roommate. He says, “Weren’t those that other band you like? The Tragically something?”
:smack:
I sat behind some of my favorite musicians without realizing it. So yes, I’m american, a big fan, but not so great at identifying the band members when they’re not on stage.
Yeah, that’d be rare. An American driving around here with their car swaddled in American flags. I sometimes go 30 or 40 hours without seeing one.
Edited to add: When I got to the bottom of the thread, my post looked a little snider than it did in my head. So, not so much with the snide, and more with the humour. With a ‘u.’
Absolutely. I’d recommend “Up To Here” or “Road Apples”, and I predict you’ll like both of them more than “Day for Night”.
The Hip lost me a bit in the late nighties and on. I’ve found their current music to be a little too bland - it mainly seems to lack the hooks their earlier music had.
Four of the first six tracks on “Up to Here” are all fantastic:
Blow at High Dough
New Orleans is Sinking
38 Years Old
Boots or Hearts
Doesn’t get much better than that.
If you’re into purchasing tracks online, I think picking out the Hip’s ‘greatest hits’ on a track-by-track basis is a good way to go. They never really did ‘concept’ albums, and the songs stand on their own.
Aside from the songs above, here are some of the Hip’s best songs (in no particular order):
Ahead by a Century
Fiddler’s Green
Long Time Running
At the Hundredth Meridian
50 Mission Cap
Bobcaygeon
Grace, too
Nautical Disaster
So Hard Done By
Locked in the Trunk of a Car
Courage

Man, looking at that list - that’s a great collection of songs. I can’t imagine anyone not liking that stuff. If you want to try just one new track, see if you can hear “Boots or Hearts”. One of my favorites.
Yeah, those people are called “Republicans”. They have to prove their patriotism by draping themselves in the flag. Pay them no mind.
Me too. After “Trouble at the Henhouse”, I bought a few more of their albums, but didn’t enjoy them. Their latest is much better, but not as good as the early 90s stuff.
jsgoddess, just adding to Sam Stone’s recommendations, I would pick up “Fully Completely”, as well. “Up to Here” and “Road Apples” are great and have a raw rock/blues feel to them. “Fully Completely” was a little more polished. You’ll enjoy all of them.
I’ve heard of them – and think I might have bought one of their CDs – but only because I follow skating, and Kurt Browning (my all-time favorite skater) once used one of their songs.
Sure, but go backwards in time to their previous albums - Fully Completely, Road Apples, and Up To Here. Some of the later albums have their moments (esp. Phantom Power) but the last few have been utterly worthless.
Like most bands, they had a certain amount of great music in them and then it ran out.
They wrote the song especially for him to use in his routine. Oh, and Kurt’s my favorite skater, too.
Other great songs I’d suggest include “Thompson Girl,” “Eldorado,” “Three Pistols,” “The Luxury,” and “Fire in the Hole.”
I don’t know about that. I’m pretty fond of “The Ocean” and “World Container”.
