Netflix blurb says PG “Parental guidance suggested. Some material may not be suitable for children.”

I don’t know much about ratings and nothing about children but, why, what, ‘‘may not be suitable’’? If ever there were a film with nothing offensive to anyone shouldn’t The Trip to Bountiful be it?

There’s only been a score or so live-action G-rated movies since 1985, and most of them were documentaries.

[You pretty much can’t have any profanity and retain the G rating](http://www.mpaa.org/ratings/what-each-rating-means). I haven’t seen it, but I’m familiar with the story and understand the main character is an ornery old lady. Surely her language strays at least once?

When she finally gets to Bountiful, she finds that her old friend, really her only friend, has just died, and her childhood home is in ruins. It’s unlikely this movie will appeal much to kids anyway, but anyone watching it as a family might have to explain why the old lady collapses in despair when she’s hauled back to live with her son.

For a long time now, the G Rating has been viewed as a kiss of death for a movie.

A Pippi Longstocking goodie-two shoes type of movie that makes most people gag is what most people think of when the G Rating is discussed.

I think the last G-rated movie I ever heard of was _Going Coconuts_ with Donnie and Marie Osmond. Ewwwwwwww.

So, everything is at least PG.

It’s like that on TV too. Old _Bonanza_ reruns are graded TV-14. You should be fourteen years old before you watch _Bonanza_? Cripes, they used to have kiddie lunch boxes with Ben and the boys on them.

Brilliant 1999 “G” movie directed by David Lynch:

That’s one of those movies I meant to watch and forgot about. Have to check it out sometime. Another “G” movie that was pretty good was [The Rookie](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265662/?ref_=nv_sr_1), but somehow they got away with letting Rachel Griffiths grab Dennis Quaid’s butt. I don’t remember any bad language in that one, though.

Yeah nothing like seeing the words
“Walt Disney Productions presents”
and
“A David Lynch film”
on the screen together to make your head asplode.
