Trump uses Neil Young’s Rockin’ in the Free World at Mt. Rushmore, Neil files cease and desist. I guess Trump didn’t hear these lyrics We got a thousand points of light For the homeless man We got a kinder, gentler, Machine gun hand We got department stores and toilet paper Got styrofoam boxes for the ozone layer Got a man of the people, says keep hope alive Got fuel to burn, got roads to drive That man of the people would be Jesse Jackson. It’s like Reagan using Springsteen’s Born in the USA, hardly a blindly patriotic song. And Sara Palin with Heart’s Barracuda, which has this line - If the real thing don’t do the trick, you better make up something quick. Trump also used Tom Petty’s Don’t Back Down a few weeks ago, his estate filed cease and desist. ---

Every instance of their communication must have been for her like talking to a child. And from the few reported examples I know that she indeed talked to him like to a child, patiently and calm, but nothing ever stuck. The intellectual gap between Angela Merkel and Trump definitely is staggering. ETA: that’s why Germany rather looks well in the Covid-19 crisis. Heck, our chancellor is a scientist and knows how to interpret numbers. She even knows what exponential growth means! ---

I’ve never been the flag-waiving “USA! USA!” type, but I’ve always had at least a little bit of pride in my country. I never thought I’d admire other countries’ leaders more than my own, but I realize that it’s a matter of survival: if you love democracy and good things in this world, I don’t give a fuck if you’re American. If you’re American, you realize that the defenders of democracy ain’t us; it’s Canada. It’s Germany. It’s France (probably). It’s New Zealand. It’s South Korea - yes, South Korea. And Taiwan. They are defending democracy more than we are. ---
