Cruz was born in Canada, so his US citizenship derives from one parent (_jus sanguinis_). The entertaining part about his ancestry is that his father got political asylum _after_ his student visa had expired. Haley was born in the United States (thus citizenship _jus soli_) to parents, both of whom (presumably) had immigrated. What the bigots want is for children of minorities to not be granted citizenship. (No doubt they’d be quite happy to yank the citizenship of all minorities all the way back to 1868.) They pretend that the wording of the Fourteenth Amendment applies to the _parent_; however, it is quite clear that the amendment applies to the “person born” (the child).
