I would personally say that it’s a worse thing to deny racism because it forces one to confront (possible) unfortunate truths, than to point out the occasional bit of disgraceful human history to remind us that we’re flawed creatures who act irrationally in the name of our chosen identities on occasion. ---

The rest of the world sees us as a bunch of scared, racist misogynic religious assholes that don’t care about anyone but ourselves. This is Donald Trumps persona. It is Donald Trump. This is what he has done. It is his legacy. The ‘good’ is we are identifying those scared, racist misogynic religious assholes. We are going to have to let them step forward, and express their feelings. Then, we will see if there are more good people than bad in the USA. ---

Or sometime after then - maybe since Reagan? Or maybe since 1948 - that’s when “Ugly American” was coined. But in any case, it was solidly cemented in the Bush era. ---
