> In general I think the people pushing these interventions were naive but well-meaning. I’m sure there were also plenty of people looking to cash in on foreign adventures, but the fact that it never really worked out so well, I think, I doesn’t negate the fact that people really though US democracy was the answer to the world’s problems. I think the alternative is to think that people were pushing US-style democracy in these places while deep down believing it wouldn’t work without real American ™ voters.
>
> eta: And I fully realize that this may make me naive as well.

Well, we’re starting to drift far away from the object of this thread, but ultimately I think there was (and is) and real tension between what the Average Joe believes and votes for, which might well include a sincere wish for more goodness and freedom and free speech for more people all over the world on one hand ; and the ultimate goal of foreign affairs in general, which is to engineer world events and regimes that strictly put or keep the US on top - people can be good, altruists even (even though, as life goes by in front of my eyes, I believe in that less and less) ; but governments, nations and corporations are sociopathic, self-serving and amoral. The Cold War was just an expression of that - trying to keep America in power, mostly by undermining Russia’s power (or internationalist thought’s power), by any mean. Democracies would have been nice and all, but since the free people of the world kinda sorta wanted more internationalism, less unrestrained capitalist plundering and less American hegemony, weeeeeeell…

How is it not a bigger story that yesterday, the president of the United States acknowledged in a court of law that his “charity” was a fraud to enrich himself and his family? By court order he has to pay millions in fines, and is no longer trusted to be involved in philanthropic work anymore without significant oversight.

The president of the United States, by law, can’t run a soup kitchen, but has the nuclear codes. And this is a page three story.

Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, was apparently scheduled to appear on CNN and announce the probe of the Bidens when Congress pressured Trump into releasing the limitary aid. He was scheduled to make the announcement two days later, but quickly cancelled once the Aid was assured.

We’re fortunate that the Right Hand didn’t know what the other Right Hand was doing, or else we’d have had this bit of propaganda hovering over a Democratic candidate, regardless of whether the blackmailing was exposed later or not.

Scruples have nothing to do with it. I think it is just an attempt to keep from being thrown under a bus - pure self preservation. He’s a scumbag, but he’s smart enough to know he has to protect himself for when Trump turns on him TOO. Like he ALWAYS does.

Frivolous court cases, unfounded recount demands, specious claims of outright fraud, outrageous things I’m too innocent to even imagine until he actually does them. We are in for a very bad period following election day 2020, no matter what the result is. If he wins, we get the worst president in history for four more years. If he loses big, God know what he’ll do as a lame duck. If he loses by a small margin, he will do anything he can do disallow the result, and he’ll have lots of willing help.

I’m just waiting (sarcasm) for the flag wavin’ rootin’ tootin’ gun havin’ superpatriot MAGAts to start their rebellion / civil war if / when Trump is impeached and drummed out or loses.

Well, Putin is going to throw a big military parade…and we all know how the Pres loves big military parades.

_Sigh_–I guess I can see this–Russia probably has the most to remember as they suffered the most from WWII and it’s the 75th anniversary–but jeez, you’d kinda think we’d join in with our other allies…you know, the democratic ones?

Scapegoat Season!

> [@](#):

> **House GOP looks to protect Trump by raising doubts about motives of his deputies**
> House Republicans’ latest plan to shield President Trump from impeachment is to focus on at least three deputies — U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland, Trump’s lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani, and possibly acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney — who they say could have acted on their own to influence Ukraine policy.
>
> All three occupy a special place in the Ukraine narrative as the people in most direct contact with Trump. As Republicans argue that most of the testimony against Trump is based on faulty secondhand information, they are sowing doubts about whether Sondland, Giuliani and Mulvaney were actually representing the president or freelancing to pursue their own agendas. The GOP is effectively offering up the three to be fall guys.
> …
> The suggestion that Sondland, Giuliani and possibly Mulvaney made demands of Ukrainians without Trump’s explicit blessing has emerged among several theories that Republicans have offered in Trump’s defense, as witnesses testify that they believed Ukraine was being squeezed.
>

What page has the stories about how the president of the United States, decades ago, raped a woman in a fitting room, according to multiple contemporaneous accounts? I still don’t understand how that’s not the biggest story short of nuclear holocaust or confirmed extra-terrestrial life.
