I could note that during the Napoleonic era and before, brightly colored uniforms were the norm because you wanted to be able to identify who was anywhere near you on the battlefield, which was often thick with a gunpowder haze, black powder being apt to generate a smelly brimstone fog. Nowadays, camo is in because you don’t want to stand out like a roach on a wedding cake on a battlefield full of unfriendly strangers with automatic weapons. Being as our Very Stable Genius has not yet seen fit to loosen up the funding to build the first Star Destroyer or Death Star or whatever, I’d guess that the Space Force uniforms are camo because the Army quartermaster’s department probably thinks that this is a bunch of nonsense, and rather than start issuing Mandalorian suits or whatever, they’re just slapping happy new patches on the same BDUs they have entire warehouses full of already. At least, that’s what I would do if I were in charge (and accountable for the funding at hand). ---

The reason you could get away with brightly colored uniforms in the distant past was because the guns of the time were not rifled, and therefore there was no risk from snipers or even just regular soldiers shooting from several hundred yards away. Once rifled barrels became a thing, it became a lot more important to not be seen, because if you could be seen, you could be shot. The first rifled muskets started showing up in the mid-1850’s, but smooth bore muskets were still common issue in the civil war. ---

Most of the space force is very much going to be based on earth, at installations or facilities with strategic military value, and probably working alongside soldiers from the other forces. They aren’t going to pushing into enemy territory, but camo makes as much sense as anything. …That’s twice Space Force has ended up making me defend the president (sort of) ☹ ---

I saw recently that the Navy’s next aircraft carrier will be named for Dorie Miller: African-American, sailor, hero of Pearl Harbor. It will be the only carrier not named after a US president. You just _know_ that this is irritating to Trump on two levels – not me? some black guy? – and causing him to gnash his teeth in impotent rage. ---
