Now, try to picture Trump doing any of that. Nope. Can’t see it. ---

As I recall learning about that phase of California history, the Bear Flag rebels were a group of American businessmen in California who saw their financial interests being best served if they became part of the United States. Very soon after proclaiming the Bear Flag Republic, they entered into negotiations with the United States to submit to becoming an American state. This suggests that the United Stated at least implicitly recognized them. This became part of the process that led to California joining the United States. This, presumably, was those businessmen’s intentions all along. If that story is correct, I see great parallels between that and the history of Hawaii becoming a state. ---
