Making something or other great again. This is not a new tactic; the right wing was doing this in the weeks before the election. The Gov Matt Bevin, Pat Buchanan, and probably a lot of others were suggesting of some sort of bloody backlash if Trump weren’t elected. I mentioned on the Mueller / Trump impeachment thread that this would be the tactic of Trump and his base. I think right now, it’s just intimidation. Most of these people have lives, wealth, and assets to protect and wouldn’t want to risk federal charges. But somewhere down the line, perhaps beyond a Trump presidency, this shit is going to get real, particularly if there is more and more political proselytizing in government institutions such as law enforcement and/or the military. The thought did cross my mind that what if, instead of just Trump and his usual surrogates speaking at some fiery torch-bearing Nuremberg-style rally, someone like say John Kelley joins in the chorus and starts delivering oratory in front of crowds of war vets or even active duty soldiers? ---

Mueller is going to go forward with his investigation. There is no way he pulls back at this point, and now is the time to speed things up with Trump’s dismal approval ratings. I suspect that Mueller is channeling his inner Sun Tzu here and using the DC grand jury with a specific purpose in mind. He’s a marine, a trained warrior. He wants to choose his battlefield before going to battle, and he wants to know his odds of winning. He’ll gather evidence on Trump’s family (and Trump’s empire itself) but he’ll save charges for later - perhaps much later. He’ll instead use the DC grand jury to go after his foot soldiers: the Mike Flynn’s, the Paul Manafort’s, the infantrymen. He’ll get a sense for how a DC grand jury might view the mounting evidence. Meanwhile, he’ll give them a choice: get off light and sing like fucking song birds, or spend years wearing an orange jump suit and thinking about that first choice that was offered. ---
