Well, #2 is actually a (presumably Muslim) woman setting fire to the mosque she attended. Still – I see no sign that it was assumed to be a hate crime, and given that she was arrested the same night, that seems a very thin parallel to this current case. Not sure why it made the list. Oh wait – actually, I have a solid guess why it made the list. ---

I don’t think Beinhart, the author, is implying that characters like the PI, the Hollywood producer, or the handjob masseuse(s) are based on real people. (Seriously, I recommend this book. Beinhart’s version of the usual boilerplate “this is a work of fiction” disclaimer is, by itself, a work of art.) ---
