For some of the best insults, I recommend Peter Bowler’s [_The Superior Person’s Little Book of Words_.](https://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~wilkins/writing/Resources/essays/superiorwords.html) Among the F’s are several particularly appropriate for Trump:

> [@](#):
>
> Fabulist n. An elegant euphemism for liar.
>
> Facinorous a. Exceedingly wicked. “I will speak no ill of my opponent in this election campaign. All of us recognize and accept his truly facinorous nature.”
>
> Flagitious a. Atrocious, heinous, appallingly wicked. Suggested for use where facinorous (q.v.) is not strong enough.
>
> Fustian n. or a. Ridiculously pompous, bombastic, or inflated language.

> The clip I linked to in my previous post really highlights the fact that when he does this, the result is gobbledygook—it doesn’t make a lick of sense. How that would translate into trying to make someone feel smarter, or into providing material for ‘he really meant’ defenses, is difficult to see.

Sorry - clearly my sarcasm font got turned off - I know that Trump is not doing this with a ‘plan’ or any sense to what he is doing.

I despise Trump thoroughly, but much of the criticism against him is quite wrong-headed. It may be a good political goal to get people to hate Trump, _even if for the wrong reasons_, but _this is the Ignorance-fighting Board_.

(1) Donald J. Trump _ **IS** _ a shrewd and successful businessman. He is a fraudster and perjurer; much of his success is due to clever, almost-sociopathic manipulations and criminality, _but successful he is_. The claim that he’d have done as well putting Daddy’s money into an index fund is wrong-headed for several reasons.

(2) Donald J. Trump _ **IS** _ intelligent. He’s devoid of any intellectual curiosity, knows nothing about science, has the attention span of a banana slug and is devoid of any compassion, _but intelligent he is_. I don’t think he could hold his own with other criminal geniuses like Al Capone, Osama bin Laden or Whitey Bulger, but in a gang of average criminals, Trump would surely be the mastermind.

Case in point is the following speech. He followed the script exactly except for the additions in red. After misreading a word, he didn’t stumble; he just segued to Palin-Trump word salad and got back on track. The word salad is part of his persona that some find so loveable. Instead of a dotard squinting to read an eye-chart and failing, he came across as the quick-thinking carnival barker that conned a nation in 2016.

he is very successful in the marketing. There is no good track record for the skill in the management of the operational business, it is more the case of the opposite. It is a kind of success but I think it is not what it is usually meant by successful businessman.

Kind of. His sole business technique seems to be fuck over everyone else and get away with it because he started with more money. Unlike truly talented entrepreneurs, if he had started with nothing he’d still have nothing. So far as I can tell, all of his business success is predicated on leveraging the advantage of starting with money. You can call that shrewd and successful if you like, I guess, but if I were hiring someone to take my start-up into the big leagues Trump would be a long, long, long, long way down on my list. Elon Musk is a shrewd and successful businessman. Donald Trump is a bully with lots of available capital.

Well, average criminals tend to be no prizes in the intellect department, so sure. I find it hard to judge Trump’s raw intelligence because of his astonishing level of general ignorance. While it’s possible to be intelligent and still ignorant, the extent of Trump’s ignorance is such that I’m not sure it’s really worth hanging on the distinction. Trump makes bad decisions based on holding simplistic, naive, and incorrect beliefs, and he is extremely resistant to altering those simplistic, naive, and incorrect beliefs when presented with new information. That isn’t the behaviour of an intelligent man even if he’d hypothetically score highly on an IQ test.

Pointing to an instance where he extemporaneously covers a stumble in speaking as evidence of intelligence would be a lot more convincing if his general speaking style weren’t so horrible. While everyone’s grammar suffers in extemporaneous speech, Trump’s vocabulary, sentence structure, and constant disjointed rambling asides do not point to any significant intellect whatsoever.

That is correct. While the man understands the arcana of bankruptcy laws and contracts, that does not make for a good "business"man. If Bill Gates invests money into a business and it fails, he either winds it down or sells it for pennies on the dollars. He doesn’t drive himself and all his investors into bankruptcy.

Donald Trump, like Liam Neeson, has a particular set of skills… Trump’s is that his skill set could get him elected in this election cycle, Neeson’s was that he’d unleash holy hell to rescue his daughter. But those skill sets don’t make Trump a good President or Neeson a good father.

Is Trump intelligent enough for business? Yes. Is he intelligent enough for high-level government work? Not even close.

He is good at the bullshitting. He will tell you anything and everything, with no regard for fact. The only goal is to separate you from your money. That is not business. That is simply making wild claims and promises he never intended to deliver on. But actually building and running a lasting business? He’s always been a failure at that…
Unless making it on empty promises, taking other people’s money for “start up capital”, taking your cut up front, loading it down with your personal debts, and refusing to pay your workers counts as “good business”.

He leverages with other people’s money. He constantly makes bad decisions (bad for everyone around him). He is rich because he was born rich. If he didn’t have that silver spoon, he’d be “that guy who got fired for being stupid” or “that guy who got fired for being lazy” or simply “that asshole we couldn’t get rid of fast enough”.
In fact it’s been said, if he put all his money in the bank, collected the interest, and left it alone, he’d have more than he does now.

Ah yes, the old bankruptcy ploy. Set up a sham, get other people to buy in, take your cut, and go bankrupt. He’s done that his entire “career”. I’ve lost count of his bankruptcies.
He’s like The Producers” but in real life. Take all the money and flop, so you don’t have to pay it back. The only thing Trump has going for him, is the greed and STUPIDITY of other so called “smart rich guys”.

Trump is nothing more than a bullshit salesman. If he ever actually had to deliver on something, he’s fucked. But now he’s president. So we’re all fucked instead.
And that fat orange shit stain will skate off and declare that he was the best, a winner. And as always, it will be someone else that has to clean all the shit of the floor. And the walls.

I’m not a good poker player, but I get online sometimes, and even go to the casino on rare occasion. There are skilled players who can start with a short stack, and work their way up to ridiculous amounts through their skill. Then there are those who can kinda hold their own, (on a good day, I am in that catagory.) Then there are the ones who get lucky. They do something stupid, but catch the one card in the deck to save them, so the end up quadrupling up or more, and think that they did well. They continue with that behavior, as it is the behavior they followed when they were a winner.

Now, I’ve gotten lucky before, and found myself sitting at the table with the biggest stack. That didn’t make me a better player, yet I was able to take other people’s money with greater ease. Having that stack let me bully other players around, it gave me options that others didn’t.

If I start with a short stack, I rarely make money, and usually just lose it all. But if I manage to get a big win, then I can usually keep leveraging that into bigger wins. I usually do this by bullying people at the table. Having the biggest stack just puts you in such a much better position, that you can usually beat players that are actually better than you.

That’s how I see trump, he septupled up by sucking out on the river. It wasn’t skill, it was luck. But that win made him declare himself the best poker player ever, and his subsequent bullying at the table makes him feel even more powerful. He doesn’t dare to go to the big table, with your Mark Cubans or Bill Gates’s, because he knows that they would own his ass. Instead, he picks encounters with those who are weaker or dumber than he is. People that can be intimidated by his big stack, and can be bullied about.

Trump is probably only a bit below average intelligence, but that’s okay, because that’s still smarter than nearly half the population, and that half of the population makes up his base.

I really don’t see it as that great a recovery. To be fair, I am a little impressed he managed to even realize that he was not speaking the words that had been provided for him to read, but his extemporaneous remarks about having great sailors had nothing to do with either the word standard or stranded. It was just some stupid fodder that dribbled from his mouth while he extracted his foot.

Indeed. See [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=825048).

As for the White-Supremacist-in-Chief, Traitor Trump, it’s too bad he did not show as much passion for the neo-Nazis in Charlottesville as he did for athletes’ peaceful protests. Too bad but not surprising. He IS a bum and nothing but.

Your analogy breaks down in one important way. You can’t bluff your way to a reputation as a world-class poker player, because you eventually have to show your cards. Trump never shows his cards. All he knows how to do is bluff. He upends the table (or sets fire to it), stomps out, calls the other players liars and cheats, flushes the deck down the toilet, or just plain stonewalls. No skill at all.

>
>

Great post. DoTard didn’t get rich until Daddy died. There’s a reason for that.

Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors said he would not be attending the White House reception for the champion Warriors, so Trump canceled the whole invitation:
Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team.Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!

LeBron James responded:

Fred snuffed it in '99 – I think STFU-Donny was already a national nuisance at the time, albeit more a of local problem and blorter of noises.

I don’t do sports and have only a vague idea of who LeBron James is, and that’s only because I saw him in a Pepsi commercial. But he’s my new hero.

Orange ShitGibbon:Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out! He’s fired?”

He’s fired! You know, some owner is gonna do that. He’s gonna say, “That guy that disrespects our flag, he’s fired.”

… adding that he thinks any owner who fired a player for that reason would be “the most popular person in the country.”

Commissioner of the league, Goodell, [responds in an official statement](https://www.thewrap.com/nfl-chief-roger-goodell-slams-trumps-divisive-remarks-son-b-players-protest/),
_The NFL and our players are at our best when we help create a sense of unity in our country and our culture. There is no better example than the amazing response from our clubs and players to the terrible natural disasters we’ve experienced over the last month. Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities._
