Scenario: Russia (at the behest of Republicans) begins attacking US voting systems all over the country. The public agencies at various levels begin detecting the suspicious activity, which quickly makes it into the public information sphere of blogs, twitter, and regular media. Republicans, knowing they will probably lose the election under otherwise normal circumstances, seize on the opportunity to cast doubt on the ability of the country to have free and fair elections. So they then propose a congressional law to postpone the elections until a full investigation can be completed and until they can be sure that they can protect against fraud. Or perhaps they have the elections and then Republican-controlled election boards and officials refuse to certify the results.

Here’s the thing, even if this Republican conspiracy were not to be completely successful, it wouldn’t necessarily have to be in order to destroy the credibility of election outcomes in this country. There could be widespread unrest as a result, and that’s where the military would come in.

**Wonder Woman** is, fundamentally, about Wonder Woman and her origin story. It’s about setting up her appearance in _Justice League_ and subsequent movies. That said, anyone not seeing the underlying theme of female empowerment (not least because WW kicks ass as well as, say, Captain America and does so in a time when women in America couldn’t even vote) is not paying attention.

Where’s the evidence that people who like superhero movies are more likely to be Trump supporters? This seems like a weird idea to me, because the villains in comic books are nearly always totalitarians. Most of the people who are fans of comics, science fiction, and that sort of thing that I know of are liberals. I’ve never seen anyone in line for these movies with a MAGA hat. I do not believe I am an “outlier”. Someone here is expressing his own prejudices as fact, and I wish he’d stop that.

What was your actual point? You seem to be saying that there is some correlation between people liking superhero movies and support for Trump. If that is not what you meant, why did you phrase it this way?

The popularity of movies that don’t require a lot of thought has nothing whatsoever to do with whether people put any thought into their political opinions and the assertion that it does is just silly.

> Two things: First, you have shown absolutely so support for your opinion that somehow Hollywood Box Office genres are in any way related to who is elected president. And second, you’re kinda being a dick about it. Just an opinion.

First, Donald Fucking Trump is POTUS. That should be plenty of evidence that the American public, in general, is NOT searching for nuanced, reasonable approaches to problem-solving.

I can’t believe that on this board I would have to “convince” people that superhero stories, by and large, are not about finding the nuanced, reasonable solution to problems, are not about compromising with adversaries, etc. They are simplistic stories of good and evil, where there really aren’t a whole lot of grey lines and the solutions are “beat someone/something into submission or death”.

And the American public eats that shit up like there’s a limited supply. Not just the standard superhero movies, either: look at the popular TV shows of the past 15 years, for instance. _24_? _Sopranos_? _Game Of Thrones_? _Breaking Bad_? How long a list would you like to examine?

How about books? Was _Fifty Shades of Grey_ really subtle, with complex characters and situations? How about the _Twilight_ books? I know that the Hunger Games books weren’t subtle; I read those.

IMO there’s a correlation between what people choose to watch and be entertained by and who they choose to be their president: all their opinions on watching and listening to him are informed by their prior experiences listening to and watching others, even fictional characters. And the characters they like, the way they act and the way they talk, is also a lot like how Trump acts and talks. His solutions are simple solutions, because when he talks he reduces all the problems to simplistic problems, even if they aren’t. “Build a wall”, for instance. “Lock her up.” Even if you don’t see the parallels the same as I do, I’d be surprised if you didn’t also think that of the two, Trump was more simplistic and less-nuanced in his speaking than Hillary Clinton.

And you know what happens in superhero movies, right? In the end, the superhero saves the day, gets rid of the bad stuff and is everyone’s hero. IMO the psychology at work is going to help those people decide to vote for Trump, yes, but it also signifies, in a larger sense, that Americans currently favor simplistic solutions. And my evidence for this is, again, the fact that Donald Fucking Trump is POTUS.

Second, if people hadn’t pushed hard against my initial post, apparently without understanding any of it (except, of all people, **BigT** got most of it right IIRC), I wouldn’t push back.

I saw this and at first I wondered how he could get around something that Congress passed, but then I remembered that foreign policy is the domain of the POTUS, so I figured that legally he could prolly do what he’s doing.

I am not sure I follow. It seems you are very upset about this, but I really don’t understand what it is you are trying to say.

What am I going to let him get away with? Well, assuming by “I”, you mean congressional democrats, “we” have already allowed him to get away with withdrawing from TPP, the paris climate deal, sanctions on russia, gutting ACA, and so on. With the help of congressional republicans, “we” have allowed him to get away with stealing a SCOTUS seat, bankrupting our future with a tax bill we don’t need and can’t afford, and so on.

Your last sentence/question doesn’t relate to anything that I have said. Do “what” for him? And why do you think that “I” would do so, “in the name of gullibility”?

Okay, I haven’t voted for a republican since 1998, what next?

The Mueller investigation is proceeding at the pace it proceeds to the conclusion that it goes to. In the meantime, how are we to stop him from passing any legislation, when his party controls congress? There is the filibuster (for the moment), but using it to shut down the govt won’t win you any votes, which is ultimately what you need.

What past evidence points towards your conclusion?

The fact that you (all) are expecting the Super Hero Robert Mueller to swoop in and save the day, while at the same time, refusing to even consider other options to mitigate the damage while waiting for him to put on his cape, informs me that it is not I that is lacking the nuance to make considered, reasoned, informed choices about complex subjects.

That’s how the last shut down played out. I think the democrats actually came out ahead in the end, but public perception seems to disagree.

The democrats do need to get public perception on their side. That’s really the only way to reduce the harm that trump and his cRonies can do.

> In fact, if Congress was worth a damn, they have the power to marginalize and steamroll him. They can pass laws/bills, override vetoes, etc etc etc. But they won’t. And Dems should NEVER pay for that wall. Make Trump choke on it. After all, whenever he goes whining to the Mexican president for support on the wall, he tells HIM t isn’t that important. So fuck the wall.

Congress has the power to do that, but congressional democrats do not. In order for them to have that power, they need to elect more democrats. In order to elect more democrats, they need to stop fighting unwinnable battles.

Until I see some actual data that suggests that there’s an _actual correlation_ between going to superhero movies and voting for Trump, this supposed relationship is some of the stupidest bullshit I’ve seen lately. (And in a thread about trump, that’s saying something.)

If this stupid bullshit was true, then you’d have seen superhero movies tank in large, urban cities - because Trump tanked in large, urban cities. Anybody care to prove that this happened? Nobody? Good. Because that’s idiotic.

Now can we shut it with the whole “not being able to distinguish between fiction and reality” bullshit?

K9, any good people left in congress should not compromise on a bad bill if it only makes it a little less bad. We should keep up the rhetoric and the protests and let congress know that we are doing our best to unseat them. Hopefully, 2018 will turn over lots of republican seats to democrats. I’m talking ANY election. Mayor, county commissioner sheriff, whatever. That I think will get congress to see what’s on the horizon for them, and perhaps ACT.
