Anyone care to argue against the notion that tonight’s announcement of (maybe by May or so) talks between North Korea and the US is much of anything other than an attempt to seize the narrative away from the Mueller investigation, White House staff turnover and Stormygate? I’ll hang up and listen. ---

North Korea has been setting this up all along, beginning with the Olympics outreach to the South Korean president. Right now is a tough time for North Korea: they’re in their harvest period and they’ve been reduced to using human shit as fertilizer for the last few years, and international sanctions are having an impact. The increase in the frequency of North Korea army defectors is probably a telling sign of potential unrest in the agency that Kim actually cares about the most. So there’s no question that years of pressure - not just Trump but Obama’s too - are having a toll and Kim wants temporary relief. But I suspect that the “offer” is not going to be something that the US finds favorable in the long run. I’d be surprised if North Korea were to go completely without nukes - at minimum, they’ll have the capacity to nuclearize in short order going forward. I think Kim Jung Un senses an opportunity to a) gain some respect by having direct talks with the US; b) wants security assurances in the form of a reduced US role in Asia (or at least South Korea). ---

Too bad I can’t find a video link anywhere, so I’m glad I caught on PBS tonight Paul Ryan holding forth in Atlanta on not being too crazy about tariffs. Onstage next to him is a large square of wood, passing for a podium, with a little Home Depot sign on it and a mic sticking out the top. Behind him is a beautiful gleaming stainless steel new barbeque set, and a pretty nice, skookum-looking tool case, almost as tall as Ryan. Unfortunately it was a close-up, so I was deprived of what other fine products there might have been onstage. Sure makes for one dandy screenshot on my tv, but admittedly the surroundings might’ve detracted somewhat from the gravity of the proceedings.
