A week ago I questioned the “51st State” thing on the basis that the Louisiana purchase didn’t become a gigantic state of Louisiana. Besides attaching Yukon to Alaska and saying PEI and BC needed new names, I left the other provinces be states of their own to make a nice round number of 62 states. It was pointed out that that would be basically be the end of any Republican majority in both houses. Even giving the GOP Alberta, which I’ve heard compared to Texas a lot, to cancel out whatever renamed British Columbia adds, that’s still a net addition of 20 Dem senators and assuming proportional voting and some WAG of about 32 electoral votes, again somewhere around 26 more Dem congressman. So were Canada to agree to this on those terms, Mitch and the boys would be over to the White House to ixnay that idea, yet they would agree this means Canada has taken Trumps threats to be some kind of wisdom, and are therefore amenable to just become added territory like the Marshall Islands. Nobody said anything about statehood, 51st or anything like that. Of course it would be egregious taxation without representation and wars have been fought over that. But yeah, NORAD and NATO and Canada has an army too, so whatever “protection” Trump is threatening again sounds like some Mobster shake-down talk. ---

I never understood why he had such a fixation on _all of Canada_ - which he should call “America’s Hat” like Homer Simpson, other than a way to get a much bigger slice of the Arctic resources. In or or two NATO (and NORAD and sovereign statuses) disregarding military campaigns Greenland, then the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (and why not Yukon too) the USA would have at least 12+ slices (depending on Iceland’s claim) out of the 24. The combined population is less than 2 million and I’ve no idea what kind of health care they’d ever get (certainly not what Denmark and Canada are giving). Of course in what I will (if he won’t) call the “America’s Hat Campaign” Trump could walk-back any mention of “state” which has to be represented (only so much a compliant SCOTUS can bend the Constitution); yet as a state, chatGPT tells me: The State of Canada would be apportioned: > 52 (House)+2 (Senate)=54 Electoral Votes which would tie them with California. In my almost-status-quo province-\>state conversion, it looks even worse (for the GOP) > Canada’s **85 votes would significantly shift presidential elections**. > Ontario + Quebec alone (36 votes) **could decide elections** , much like Florida + Pennsylvania today. So he really ought to STFU about anything Canada like he has with his Mar-A-Lago in Gaza plan. Yet now, when world opinion of the USA is at perhaps an all-time low, there is less downside to making the world angrier (Vance/Hegseth/Rubio, while not saying STFU to the NATO people, at least are carrying the “who asked you to speak?” message.) Keir Stermer is saying things that triumvirate + Trump + Musk do not like. He still has (according to his schedule) the rest of the month to see Trump, bend the knee and present KCIII’s invite. Yet Putin is looking a lot more like Trump’s BFF as each day passes. ---

It’s tempting to try to make rational sense of it. That’s what we do as human beings - try to impose order on an inherently chaotic world. But trying to do so to his insane ramblings is unhealthy. That ways lies sanewashing and madness. He did not reason himself into his beliefs, therefore nobody is going to reason him out of them. At best, somebody might be able to convince him some course of action will work against his interests. Maybe.
