For the most part, unions were strongly against NAFTA, so yes, there’s an understanding from organized labor that tariffs on manufactured goods make it harder for American companies to shift manufacturing across the border. The hope from Sean Fain is that these tariffs will motivate the Big Three to move some jobs to the US. Eta: most (but not all) unions, including the uaw, were strongly against Trump. Eta: the uaw currently has organizing drives going at Volkswagen plants; I suspect that has something to do with his mention of that automaker. ---
