The NY times has an interesting in depth article about how the decision to go to war was made ([gift link](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/07/us/politics/trump-iran-war.html?unlocked_article_code=1.ZlA.hHSw.WDBmM_GrS69S&smid=url-share)) Long story short Netanyahu made a slick video presentation that regime change in Iran would be easy peasy. US intelligence looked at the assertions made and called them “farcical”, but Trump decided to believe him anyway. Everyone except Hegseth thought it was a really bad idea, but only Vance actually pushed back against it. And there was also this exchange with Tucker Carlson which exemplfies the attitude of someone for whom the consequences on their actions always fall on someone else. > A couple weeks before the war began, Mr. Trump, who had known Mr. Carlson for years, tried to reassure him over the phone. “I know you’re worried about it, but it’s going to be OK,” the president said.
