It’s always bugged my inner OCD that the the line between the Washington monument and the White House is not a right angle from the one between the Lincoln memorial and the Capitol. Wiki says the ground under the ‘proper’ spot was not stable enough to bear the weight.

That’s the one. It was the third and last of Ivan Tors’ Office of Scientific Investigation movies, and the glitziest. not only was it made in color, it was in 3D!

I first saw it as a kid on TV in the 1960s, and was impressed. then it disappeared for years. I never saw it on TV, or on video, or on obscure cable networks. Then they found the 3D version and restored it. I had to get a copy, which i showed at Arisia two and a half years ago, with 3D glasses.

Looking at it as an adult, I’m not as impressed with it, but it was pretty decently made. And I do think that Michael Crichton got his idea for the lab in _The Andromeda Strain_ from it – both labs were secret bases in the desert, multi-levels with biological labs and a nuke at the bottom that threatens to explode at the climax, but our heroes prevent that.

> The Trump administration had plans to classify 2.7 million living people — including some U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents — as dead as part of its immigration enforcement efforts, according to a former senior Social Security executive.
>
> The previously unreported plan, which the Social Security Administration said was not carried out, would have used one of the government’s most consequential identity databases to effectively erase people from the financial system, potentially cutting them off from wages, banking, government benefits and other services.
>
> Jeremiah Schofield, who worked at Social Security for 25 years and helped lead the agency’s IT modernization efforts before leaving in October, said he refused to help implement the plan after agency lawyers warned that falsely marking living people as dead could violate federal law. Schofield said he realized the plan’s possible intent — to intimidate and worsen the finances of immigrants — as well as its potential unlawfulness after taking a sample of people from the 2.7 million and discovering they were all alive. Some were U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, teenagers and senior citizens, including one widow who was a legal permanent resident receiving survivor benefits.

> The move to reduce the number of recognized religions comes in direct opposition to the moves made during President [Donald Trump](https://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/donald-trump/)’s first administration.
>
> In another memo shared to USA TODAY by the MRFF, the Armed Forces Chaplains Board in 2017 endorsed a faith and belief code expansion to “standardize and better identify religious preferences recognized by the military services.”
>
> The board said the expansion in codes would also accurately track more faith and belief systems, “providing more accurate demographic data for religious groups,” as well as to better plan religious support to the armed forces.

> Last March, U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon [ruled](https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/grandiose-white-house-ballroom-plan-193046172.html) that President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom project is illegal because “no statute comes close to giving the President the authority he claims to have.” But even if higher courts ultimately agree with Leon, a Justice Department lawyer argued on Friday, they cannot stop the project.
>
> The lawyer, Yaakov Roth, was [asking](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-appeals-court-hear-challenge-trumps-white-house-ballroom-2026-06-05/) the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to overturn Leon’s [preliminary injunction](https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.dcd.287645/gov.uscourts.dcd.287645.61.0_1.pdf), which it temporarily [stayed](https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/trump-ballroom-construction-allowed-now-us-appeals-court-says-2026-04-18/) in April, or block it while the case, [_National Trust for Historic Preservation v. NPS_](https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/73127510/national-trust-for-historic-preservation-v-nps/), is pending. Because the ballroom project serves national security interests and is already pretty far along, Roth said, it would be an “abuse of discretion” to order that it be halted pending congressional approval.
>
> “When did it become impossible for courts to stop this project?” Judge Patricia Millett, a Barack Obama appointee, [asked](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2U1Uxoh0IM) Roth. “I think it would’ve been improper to enjoin it even on day one,” he replied.
>
> Even if “this were complete lawlessness by the government,” the project “couldn’t be stopped?” Millett asked. “I think that’s right,” Roth said. He conceded that Congress could pass a law prohibiting the project, in which case the Trump administration presumably would be obliged to obey.

[But a judge is still giving it the old college try.](https://www.yahoo.com/news/politics/articles/us--trump-immigration-170901238.html)

> BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge on Friday struck down a Trump administration policy enacted after the shooting of two National Guard members that made it harder for immigrants from dozens of countries to stay and enter the U.S.
>
> In a ruling harshly criticizing the administration, U.S. District Chief Judge John McConnell Jr. said the policy “threw the lives of countless immigrants living in the United States into indeterminate legal limbo,” and he accused the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services of ignoring the law.
>
> “In enacting its latest immigration policies, USCIS: claims statutory and regulatory authority that it does not possess; makes decisions without the reasoned explanations that it must provide; acts without regard for the reliance interests of applicants that it must consider; and justifies its actions with pretextual concerns of ‘national security’ that mask anti-immigrant sentiments that it is forbidden from letting influence its decision-making,” he wrote. “In legal terms that means USCIS’s actions are contrary to law and arbitrary and capricious.”

There’s so many more but this is all I can stomach for today.

(quoted from @smithsb’s link)

Since these are Trump’s people, it seems entirely possible that they thought diesel had what plants crave.

Nitpick; corporations that own property in the town of Fenwick Island, population 343, can cast one vote each in Fenwick Island municipal elections only, and have been able to since 2008, because the town charter specifically says they can. Nothing has changed recently except that a court upheld the validity of the charter.

Picky, picky. It’s the camel’s nose under the tent. Next thing you know they’ll be saying corporations are people, and money is speech.
