I meant to end the sentence to say “A world _free_ of slavery and indentured servitude” ---

Does Hector wish for his son to have a safe, happy life? We often see the world as it is and hope we’re the ones holding the barbed whip instead of the ones being whipped. It’s much harder for us to see the world as it might be. ---

I’d think that being a freeman, without the onus and lack of an overlord would be a definite step up from being someone else’s slave. Plenty of free citizens didn’t own slaves themselves. ---

Oh surely, and most would probably not get above that. But it would be very rare for a freeman not to dream about getting slaves for himself if he could, it was not seen as something bad, on the contrary it was what _civilized_ people did. I want to believe that some, after experiencing slavery themselves, refused to do the same to other people, but if they did I don’t think there’s any historical evidence. ---
