> Heck, the pressure generated by their presentation was probably what got Garland off his fundament and made him appoint Jack Smith.

IMHO what did it was stolen documents. Garland was desperate not to appear partisan and so wanted to work his way up to Trump slowly if at all. But once it became clear that Trump had unsecured Top Secret documents in his possession, he had to act for national security and so he sent the FBI raid. After sending the raid he pretty much had to indict him for the stolen documents. You can’t raid somebody’s house and not charge them with anything. At that point, the line had been crossed and so any damage that appearing partisan might have had already been dealt so you might as well try him for Jan 6th as well.

I’m pretty sure that Garland’s actual goal was to slow-walk everything as much as possible, in hopes that Trump would get int power and kill the investigation. The primary goal of the Democrats for decades has been to protect and enable the Republicans, there’s no way they’d run an investigation that did more than make a show to appease the public but led nowhere.

Trump administration rolls back the Clean Air Act.

> As of mid-July, the administration had granted Clean Air Act exemptions to about 200 polluting facilities across 39 states and Puerto Rico, issuing its decisions in presidential proclamations full of typos and errors. In one case, a factory that doesn’t appear to exist received an exemption. The factories and plants that were given a temporary pass on Clean Air Act rules, while scattered across the country, fall disproportionately in majority nonwhite neighborhoods, according to EPA and U.S. Census Bureau data collected by the Environmental Defense Fund.

> WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court opened a path Monday for possible implementation of President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting mail-in voting, though it remains unclear how much can be put in place before the fast-approaching midterm elections.
>
> The decision leaves room for additional court challenges that could further slow Trump’s order, and other similar cases have already been filed. The U.S. Postal Service [laid out how it would implement the order](https://apnews.com/article/postal-service-midterms-trump-mail-voting-b4b9ef095b4d6bceab18adbb34814640) last week, but time is running short to impose major changes. North Carolina is sending out ballots Sept. 4 overseas and to military voters, and other states will quickly follow suit in just a few weeks.
>
> The Supreme Court’s conservative majority didn’t decide the legality of Trump’s order, instead ruling that states who sued did not have the legal right to challenge it.

And who, then, does have the legal right? The states are the ones in charge of the elections.

If it happens, the move would be the largest single mass revocation of visas in U.S. history and would likely face legal challenges.

The action will be taken in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security.
>
> “We are coordinating with DHS to identify and revoke the nonimmigrant visas of foreigners who have come to the United States claiming to be short-term visitors, but then file for asylum to stay here permanently,” said State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott.
>
> He declined to comment on the number of visas that might be revoked, saying "as the process will be ongoing, the number of revocations remains dynamic and will be done on a rolling basis.”

> Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney **Jeanine Pirro’s** office is failing to secure convictions in an [“increasingly alarming number”](https://edition.cnn.com/2026/08/24/politics/trump-ms13-conviction-jeanine-pirro) of federal cases in Washington, D.C., according to a new CNN report detailing a string of mistrials and acquittals.
>
> The network [reported](https://edition.cnn.com/2026/08/24/politics/trump-ms13-conviction-jeanine-pirro) Monday that Pirro’s office has struggled to persuade federal juries even in violent crime cases prosecutors believed presented relatively straightforward evidence, an unusual losing streak that has alarmed current and former members of Washington’s legal community.
>
> The article presented the problems as most stark in the prosecution of two alleged [MS-13](https://www.mediaite.com/media/tv/trump-doubles-down-on-ms-13-criticism-i-refer-to-them-as-animals-and-i-always-will/) leaders, **Moises Rivera-Luna** and **Tokiro Rodas Ramirez**. Prosecutors accuse the men of involvement in a conspiracy connected to murders and assaults carried out in the Washington area more than a decade ago but two separate juries have now failed to convict them.
>
> Rivera-Luna, whom prosecutors allege was a senior MS-13 figure known as “Viejo Santos,” was first tried alongside Rodas Ramirez in December. That case ended in a mistrial after jurors deadlocked. Prosecutors tried them again in April, only for a second jury to reach the same impasse.
>
> Judge **Royce Lamberth** , who has served on the federal bench for nearly four decades, said as the second trial unraveled: “I’ve done this a long time and haven’t seen one quite like this one.”
>
> The MS-13 prosecution is reportedly part of a broader pattern. Before the April retrial, Pirro’s office had secured convictions in only four of eight federal jury trials since January, according to CNN. In nearly a dozen subsequent cases, two defendants were acquitted and four trials ended with deadlocked juries.Federal criminal trials nationwide typically result in convictions roughly 90% of the time, according to federal judiciary statistics cited by CNN.

Dr. Ben Carson. Proof that you do _not_ have to be super smart to be a brain surgeon.

(He actually was a very competent brain surgeon. That doesn’t make him automatically competent or qualified at anything else.)

It’s not exactly rocket science…

Would be interesting if it was, though.

Unfortunately Elon Musk [has beaten you to the brain surgery…](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/elon-musks-neuralink-has-implanted-its-first-chip-in-a-human-brain-whats-next/)

Although “his” rocket science is more publicised.

I don’t have enough personal stake in it to bother with a new thread over this, but I’m curious and this seems a reasonably place to put my query:

What is Trump’s thing about wanting to renovate the Kennedy Centre? I understand why he wanted to re-name it in his own honour (he’s a mentally ill fuckwit). But what’s with the obsession with renovating it? Since the court blocked the name change I would have thought he would have lost interest in it. Is it simply a way to justify closing it for a few years as revenge on the lib’ruls? Or what?

I suspect that it’s similar to his obsession with rebuilding and redecorating the White House, the Reflecting Pool, etc. He knows what his own (horrible, tacky) taste is in interior and exterior design, and he wants to put that mark on as much of Washington’s high-profile buildings as he can.

It’s kind of like a dog peeing on every tree, to mark territory as “his.”
