As I understand the test, you see a page of animals. Then maybe you try and draw a comprehensible clock and proceed with the test. At the end of the test, what animal did you see? I saw a giraffe! When the doctors recover from this intelligence mastery, they look at your clock and say "Clocks are round, have ‘hands’ that point to the minute and hour’. Actually, I don’t think they give your brilliant “grade” even if your clocks look like Salvadore Dali.

Way too easy. The thing with the cognitive test is spatial understanding and being able to render something anyone in a normal state can. “It’s 20 to 6” is difficult to do correctly even for pre-dementia/alzheirmers people yet not difficult for 79 year olds. I doubt he would “ace” it.

I dunno. It won’t lead to his removal from office.

Yet perhaps the press might find a way to inquire of him, “It is 7:20” right now. Could you use your left hand to point in the general direction your watch is pointing right now for hours, and with your right hand approximate where the minute hand is pointing.

Polygraphs suck.

I passed one in the 80s for a cruddy security job - no problem with theft or crime, yet when we got to drug use I was thinking of being on the moon, and walking on it. Completely blanked my mind and flatlined the paper graph.

Worthless.

Wouldn’t you say that it’s _either_ there’s such a thing as a criminal mind _or_ polygraphs are of no use?

That’s what I’ve always thought about that particular “investigative tool”. To my mind, a polygraph won’t work on a criminal mind so the entire endeavor is pointless.

Polygraphs are pure pseudoscience, IMO.

Fun fact: The inventor of the modern polygraph had a bondage fetish, was involved in a bisexual relationship with his wife and another woman (who continued to live together as a couple for 47 years after his death), and also created Wonder Woman.

He was also known as a self-help author and comic book writer who created the character Wonder Woman.

I have heard psychopaths (think Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman) can easily fool polygraphs.

They measure pulse, blood pressure and somehow perspiration. Perhaps nowadays they scan your brain.

The results are usually instant. Yet sure, trash a guy’s reputation days or weeks later by saying he failed the omnipotent polygraph. Isn’t Hegseth doing that with the Penataon, though he is likely saying what he expects the outcome to be. “Ms. J, you failed the polygraph. I would like your resignation within the hour else consider yourself terminated at the end of the day”

In my case, I didn’t have a brain-scanner and “out-of-bodied” just enough to say “no” and “yes” as called for. Call it lying or selectively telling the truth. Morally, I felt it none of their business if I’d used Cocaine or LSD, and kept the same frame of out-of-body when Heroin (I swear I’ve not used it!) as relief on telling the truth can alert them to ask about the other things again.

Relax, breath deep and keep your heart rate steady throughout, go out of body - thinking of The Moon worked for me.

ETA: I reckon Trump would pass a polygraph. As I understand it, psychopaths absolutely believe their answers are completely truthful..

Which is why Wonder Woman has that truth-telling lasso.

Marston was surely aware of the limitation of the polygraph. If you read William Poundstone’s book _Big Secrets_, or anything about the use of polygraphs, it gives you insight into psychology, or at least that of Marston. He was convinced that most people were liars, at least under certain conditions, and used the questions he felt sure people were lying about to calibrate his device. But distracting yourself during questioning, and doubting the machine’s infallibility would let you get around the device. I suspect it’s a lot less effective in these jaded times.
